Hotel Review: Sheraton Portsmouth Harborside

Portsmouth, New Hampshire is a very cute seaside town, and my preferred hotel whenever I’m in town is the Sheraton Portsmouth Harborside Hotel. Truth be told, it’s not much of a contest, as it’s the only Starwood hotel in the area!

Check In

The check in area is just off the lobby, which is surprisingly large relative to most domestic Sheratons I’ve been to.

Check in was quick, easy and efficient.

The Room

I didn’t get a suite upgrade, likely because there were multiple wedding groups staying at the hotel (I was checking out on a Friday), but I did get a “harbor view” room (though that’s a pretty generous description). The most striking thing about the room was the enormous four post, king size bed. It absolutely dominated the space, which wasn’t particularly large.

The furnishings were nice, but I wasn’t impressed by the lack of central air. I ended up sleeping just fine, but I find that these units tend to dry out the air even more than a central temperature control system.

The least impressive part of the room was the bathroom. The finishes weren’t particularly nice, and the only source of light was the vanity. That’s fine for brushing teeth and washing your face, but it made for some surprisingly dark showers.

I can’t complain too much, because the bathroom was clean and the water pressure was adequate. But it didn’t have much going for it besides that.

I didn’t check out any of the restaurants or dining options during my stay, but I was appreciative of the free Starbucks coffee station they had set up every morning by the elevator bank.

I was on a paid stay, but this hotel is a Starwood Category 4, which means 10K points per night.

This hotel participates in Starwood’s Green Choice program, so that was an easy way to pick up an extra 500 points.

The fitness room was pretty small, but perfectly adequate for my very modest workout needs.

The valet parking option is only a couple dollars more than self-park, and is well worth it in my mind (the self-park lot is a little bit of a walk, across the street from the hotel).

Overall Impression

Overall, I was happy with my stay at the Sheraton Portsmouth Harborside Hotel. The best thing it has going for it is its location right in the heart of downtown Portsmouth. The hotel itself is perfectly fine, but not quite up to the standard I would expect given the price (in both points and dollars).
