Charleston, South Carolina, was voted the Number One City in America for the third year in a row in Condé Nast’s Readers Choice Awards. Of the cities presented, it ranked second only to Carmel, California, in its rating for ambience.
With the ‘best beaches in the southeast’, it’s no wonder Charleston took first place in our list of Top 10 Cities in the United States. The seaside proximity doesn’t just allow for some picturesque views, but for some on-of-a-kind-seafood as well. ‘The food, history, architecture, and people are wonderful,’ said one reader. ‘A bucket list city!’ – Condé Nast
Founded in 1670, The Holy City is known for its rich history, outstanding architecture and preservation, phenomenal restaurants with an appeal for all palates, and incredibly friendly people. The city is known as the “Holy City” because of the high number of churche steeples on the city skyline. Charleston was founded on the principles of religious tolerance and boasts over 400 places of worship of many different denominations throughout the city. It is the home of Gullah and Geechee, Spanish moss laden oaks, antebellum homes, Fort Sumter, and even boasts its own professional soccer team – the Charleston Battery! Charleston is Southern Charm and Southern Hospitality at its best.

Have you visited the Holy City yet?
Charleston is beautiful! I ran a marathon there a few years ago and really enjoyed it.
I hope your Marathon was in the fall! I used to live there when I in college – one of my favorite cities in the US for sure!
Great Susan!
Thanks Tommy!
I stayed at the Charleston Place hotel a while ago and had a very nice time.
That’s a really nice hotel… and perfectly located on the peninsula!
Lovely city & definitely understand why it keeps winning #1.
I’ll be more than happy to give you your own special tour the next time you find yourself on this side of the country!
Cheers!
