On the Eighth Day of Christmas Apple gave to me…. Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Well, what to say about this gift from Apple? As I am planning on writing a summary of all the gifts at the end of the 12 days, I will reserve any commentary until then.

Initially launched in May 2004 on Funbrain.com as a web book, Jeff Kinney’s of Diary of a Wimpy Kid series tells the story of middle school student Greg Heffley whose mother insists that he keep a Diary…which he does reluctantly at first.

The Diary chronicles his day to day life in middle school and finds him in conflicted situations between making the right choices, which are often foiled by his efforts to achieve popularity, and his attempts to earn the attention of girls in the school. He is constantly being undermined on his quests by his overly well-meaning parents, his brothers, or his nerdy friends.

Kinney has an incredible feel for the language of middle school aged children ( I know because I taught middle school for 12 years) and I think that, between the language and Kinney’s cartoon illustrations, he has captured the middle school angst quite well.

This is a great book for upper elementary and middle school children, but, if you, too, had a rocky time in middle school (or Junior High) you might find yourself on some of these pages.
