Until April 13, 2014, US Airways is offering a bonus of 100% on sharing between 30,000 and 50,000 miles between Dividend Miles accounts.
Last night a friend and I stumbled across a banner at the bottom of the US Airways Dividend Miles page announcing a Share Miles promotion. Excitement ran high as we waited for the promotion to go live and here it is! The best opportunity you will have to generate miles for your Dividend Miles (soon to be American) account!
Share miles with family and friends April 7 – 13, 2014, and you’ll give up to a 100% bonus – up to 50,000 more miles. The more you share, the more you give.
What is the Cost?
The cost to share miles through this promotion costs one cent per mile, plus a 7.5% federal excise tax, and a $30 transaction fee. You can share at most 50,000 miles per transaction before the bonus, meaning with the 100% bonus you could transfer a total of 100,000 miles at a cost of $567.50. To maximize this promotion, I would suggest buying only at the top tier in order to receive the 100% bonus.
How Do I Share Miles?
This link will take you straight to Share Miles. You will see a form where you enter your informatiion.
You will be taken to the payment page where you enter your payment choice. The cost to share 50,000 + 50,000 Bonus miles is $567.50 (including taxes/fees). This works out to a cost of $.0113 per mile.
If I were to share 50,000 miles with my friend’s US Airways account, she would then receive the 50,000 I transferred to her, but also a 50,000 mile bonus for a total of 100,000 miles. I would be left with 50,000 fewer miles than I had but then she would share back 50,000 miles with me. I would then get the 50,000 back that I transferred, plus an additional 50,000 from the share miles promo. Each of us would then have 50,000 more miles in our account for a cost per transfer of $567.50 which includes the cost of sharing plus taxes and transfer fee.
Important Points to Remember
- Your account has to be at least 12 days old to take part in this promotion.
- Only 50,000 miles can be transferred into a single account during the promotion. You could conceivably transfer into multiple accounts, yet each account can receive only one 50,00 mile bonus.
- Transactions are handled through Points.com so use your best all around card to make the purchase. A travel or airline card that typically offers multiple points per travel transaction will not earn multiple points.
How Long Will it Take?
Typically, transfers are instant however, some people have reported having to wait 1-2 days. Instant transfers usually occur with well established accounts. Remember, since accounts must be 12 days old and the promotion is only running for one week, if you do not have an account in place, you will not be able to take advantage of this promotion.
Is it Worth Sharing Miles?
In this case, I would have to answer with an unequivocal yes! US Airways, while a member of Star Alliance, had incredible award offerings on partner airlines. Now that they are a member of oneworld®, some of those great redemptions still exist. It is still possible to redeem 90,000 miles for business class on oneworld® from the US to Asia via Europe. This could also give you two first class or four economy class trips within the continental United States, a roundtrip business class ticket to South America, or North Asia.
