Up to 50,000 bonus Dividend Miles

A week or so ago, Points.com alerted us to the fact that US Airways would be initiating its Buy Miles Promotion in May and, sure enough, the email arrived today. Once again it is a tiered bonus. Although not as sweet as the Share Miles promotion that we had in April, from now through May 25th you have the opportunity to buy miles as follows:

• Buy 10,000 to 19,000 miles, get 50% bonus miles
• Buy 20,000 to 29,000 miles, get 75% bonus miles
• Buy 30,000 to 40,000 miles, get 100% bonus miles (page typo – 100% bonus is good for up to 50,000 miles)

In order to get the full 100%  bonus, you would need to buy at least 30,000 miles. The maximum bonus an account can receive is 50,000 miles therefore if you purchase 50,000 miles you would receive a total of 100,000 miles. Accounts must also be over 12 days old in order to participate, so you could actually set up a new account within the timeframe allowed to take advantage of the promotion if you don’t already have a US Airways Dividend Miles account.

When you access the Buy Miles page, you will be asked to enter your Dividend Miles membership information.Buy Miles May 2

Normally US Airways miles sell for 3.5 cents each plus a 7.5% tax recovery charge. With the current promotion the price drops down to 1.88 cents. The cost for purchasing the maximum of 50,000 miles is $1,881.25.

It makes sense, that if you are going to take advantage of this, to buy a minimum of 30-50K miles in order to receive the 100% bonus.

It may sound like a lot of money, but to be able to fly business or first class for less than $2000 is an incredible deal. I find US Airways miles to be very useful. They have afforded me the opportunity to travel to some wonderful destinations in Business or First Class – trips I only dreamed of not too many years ago. If you also have the  Barclay US Airways Dividend Miles Credit Card, and book your travel on US Airways flights, you will also get a 5000 mile discount on award travel.

Although US Airways is no longer in Star Alliance, there are many ways to redeem US Airways miles for first and business class on oneworld® carriers. It is possible to fly from the United States to Asia with British Airways (through London), or on Cathay Pacific (an airline I am eager to try) for as little as 120,000 miles.

As always, these transactions are processed by Points.com so you would not be earning extra travel category points with your branded credit card.
