Cabo San Lucas Airport (SJD) Open – Updated Airline Schedule

I caught a Tweet from @hharteveldt today on Twitter about the Cabo San Lucas Airport (SJD).

I decided to do a little research and found out that Cabo San Lucas is working very hard to ready itself for a return of visitors this fall. According to the link, the Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP) announced that on October 2, 2014, the Mexican Bureau of Civil Aviation (DGAC), the Mexican aeronautical authority, issued a statement that the Airport would be able to be opened to domestic and international commercial flights, operating under the standard security protocols in Terminal 2. The opening comes five days earlier than anticipated.

Airlines will begin flights back to Cabo (SJD) based upon demand. If you have plans to go to Cabo, most airlines have issued change waivers.  In talking with a US Airways representative last night, she suggested checking to see if your fare has decreased. If so, you may be able to have your ticket reissued with no change fee associated. Unfortunately for me, the price of my ticket for Thanksgiving week only dropped about $100 so it really wasn’t worth cancelling and rebooking.

The resorts have been sending out notices as to estimated opening dates. Depending upon the location and the severity of the damage sustained by Hurricane Odile, the dates range from mid-October to the first of January.

Current Return to Service Estimates (Subject to Change)

AeroMexico – Operating

Alaska Airlines – October 8

American Airlines – October 18

Delta Airlines – October 16

Interjet – Operating

Frontier Airlines – October 25

Southwest Airlines – October 15

Spirit Airlines – October 16

United Airlines – October 11

US Airways – October 18

Virgin America – October 22

WestJet – October 26

Efforts to have Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo up and running by the holidays are well under way. Most of the grocery and superstores (Mega, Walmart, City Club), as well as banks and gas stations, are open. City water is running, trash pickup has resumed, and electricity has been restored in many areas. The Bisbee’s Black and Blue Marlin Tournament will run as scheduled on October 17th.

  1. No way, a friend was stuck in the basement of a hotel for 5 days while the govt allowed looting of hotel rooms. New TVs for everyone!

    • First of all, I am sorry your friend was ‘stuck in the basement’ for five days. That must have been an awful experience. However, I have to say that I don’t think the government ‘allowed’ the looting of hotel rooms. According to the reports coming out of Cabo from the business owners there, they do feel that progress is being made and ‘Cabo is on the mend’. Our trip is in November and I am looking forward not only to visiting one of my favorite places, but also to taking some much needed school supplies down with me to donate to the children there.
