Well, ‘Apple’s 12 Days of Gifts’ is over, ending its initial launch in the United States. The post Christmas giveaway which has been offered by Apple in a number of countries since 2008, made its debut this year in the United States. Four music gifts, two iBooks, four games, a movie, and a television show episode for kids were offered for free download during the 12 days following Christmas. The entire collection of songs, books, games and videos had a value somewhere in the ballpark of $65.
The single most expensive item was Martin Scorsese’s 2011 movie Hugo, which typically costs $14.99 and right behind that was Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2014 which usually sells for $9.99 on iTunes. Most of the game apps would typically sell for $.99 to $2.99. One thing I did notice was that the gaming apps were often listed for free ahead of time on the Apps Gone Free App which made them a little less appealing as part of the 12 Days of Gifts extravaganza.
While Apple’s offers were not going to please everyone every day, at least they covered a wide range of interest and age, so, hopefully, if you had the 12 Days app, you could find at least one item that piqued your interest.I downloaded almost everything that was offered, passing on Once Upon A Time, Sesame Street, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I have become slightly addicted to Rayman Jungle Run and Mr. Crab. I did download Toca House just to see what it was all about and I can see where it would be very appealing to young children.
My favorite downloads were Hugo, which I plan on watching on my upcoming cross country flight on US Airways; Avicii’s New Year’s Mix because I love Avicii anyway; and the two games, Rayman Jungle Run and Mr. Crab.
Not all of the offerings were the same in the US and UK,. The UK participants had the opportunity to download an episode of the BBC Africa production (TV Show), The Ice Princess (iBook), Home Alone (movie), Tom Odell Live (six tracks – music), and Despicable Me Presents: Minion Madness (mini-movie).
