American has just rolled out the New AAdvantage program outlining the &#8216;benefits&#8217; as they pertain to the combining of the two programs. And, as expected, current AAdvantage program members &#8216;win&#8217; &#8211; because there are basically few changes to what they now experience &#8211; and Dividend Miles members come out on the short end of the stick, losing one status tier and complimentary upgrades.<\/p>\n<p>I know that my dear friends at <a href=\"http:\/\/viewfromthewing.boardingarea.com\/2014\/10\/28\/american-just-announced-2015-program-heres-need-know-isnt-website\/\" target=\"_blank\">View from the Wing<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/onemileatatime.boardingarea.com\/2014\/10\/28\/new-american-aadvantage-program\/\" target=\"_blank\">One Mile at a Time<\/a> are simply ecstatic over these changes but the conversation\u00a0from US Airways Dividend Miles members at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flyertalk.com\/forum\/23749678-post22.html\" target=\"_blank\">FlyerTalk <\/a>is not echoing the same sentiment. I find it interesting that <em>both<\/em> Gary and Ben had a chat with Suzanne Rubin yesterday before the announcement was officially made.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some of the key points:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In early 2015, members who have an account in both programs will have the opportunity to match their accounts. This is the next step before the program integration, which will offer customers a more seamless experience whether their flight is on American or US Airways. American began offering reciprocal benefits to AAdvantage and Dividend Miles members in January 2014, just one month after the close of the merger. The only problem with this reciprocal benefits stuff is that it tends to work more on the US flights for AAdvantage members than on the American flights for Dividend Miles members.<\/p>\n<p><b>AAdvantage Elite Status Membership Levels<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>AAdvantage offers three levels of elite status membership \u2013 AAdvantage Executive Platinum, Platinum and Gold. Customers will continue to qualify for elite status based on elite-qualifying miles, points or segments. The current 100-segment threshold for Executive Platinum will continue until Dec. 31, 2014. On Jan. 1, 2015, the segment qualification requirement for Executive Platinum will be 120 segments for the 2016 membership year.<\/li>\n<li>When the programs are combined, the four elite status levels in the Dividend Miles program will be aligned\u00a0to the three elite status levels of the AAdvantage program and\u00a0US Airways Platinum members will be \u201cdowngraded\u201d to 50,000 mile AAdvantage Platinum members.<a href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/carolinatravelgirl\/files\/2014\/10\/New-Advantage-Program-3.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4127\" src=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/carolinatravelgirl\/files\/2014\/10\/New-Advantage-Program-3.png\" alt=\"New AAdvantage Program\" width=\"633\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/carolinatravelgirl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/\/sites\/53\/2014\/10\/New-Advantage-Program-3.png 633w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/carolinatravelgirl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/\/sites\/53\/2014\/10\/New-Advantage-Program-3-300x159.png 300w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/carolinatravelgirl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/\/sites\/53\/2014\/10\/New-Advantage-Program-3-560x298.png 560w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/carolinatravelgirl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/\/sites\/53\/2014\/10\/New-Advantage-Program-3-260x138.png 260w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/carolinatravelgirl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/\/sites\/53\/2014\/10\/New-Advantage-Program-3-160x85.png 160w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 633px) 100vw, 633px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Upgrades will no longer be complimentary for US Airways Platinum, Gold and Silver members after the integration of the program. Complimentary upgrades will be given for flights of 500 miles or less. This will be helpful for those who fly shuttles in the Northeast and those who fly short flights in Texas from the DFW hub. Bonus miles will, therefore, increase for those members who retain Platinum status with American.<\/li>\n<li>2014 elite qualifying activity from both US Airways and American will be combined\u00a0to determine your elite status for the rest of 2015.<\/li>\n<li>For those who qualify on segments, top tier will require 120 next year instead of 100. This is in line with the current requirements for Chairman Preferred.<\/li>\n<li>Top tier elites from both airlines will get the American AAdvantage benefit of 8 sytemwide upgrades\u00a0(international upgrades) that can be confirmed at booking (subject to availability) or waitlisted on any paid fare.<\/li>\n<li>US Airways elites will receive a starting balance of 500-mile upgradesbased on the elite qualifying\u00a0miles they have flown in 2014.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Dividend Miles Members<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"spacebottomsm\">Right now:<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"pub-related-links\">\n<li>Complimentary snacks and drinks in the Main Cabin for Chairman&#8217;s Preferred members on all US Airways and American flights<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"clear padbottommd\"><strong>\u00a0January 2015<\/strong><\/div>\n<ul class=\"pub-related-links\">\n<li>Enjoy complimentary same-day confirmed flight changes on American, a new benefit for Chairman&#8217;s Preferred members<\/li>\n<li>Redeem all your Special Dividends by early 2015; qualification ends in December 2014<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"clear padbottommd\"><strong>\u00a0Second quarter of 2015 (when programs are combined)<\/strong><\/div>\n<ul class=\"pub-related-links\">\n<li>Move to three elite status levels in the AAdvantage program \u2013 Gold, Platinum and Executive Platinum<\/li>\n<li>Qualify for elite status based on elite-qualifying miles, segments and points<\/li>\n<li><strong>Receive a 100% mileage bonus if you&#8217;re a Dividend Miles Gold or Platinum member who becomes AAdvantage Platinum<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Redeem miles for AAnytime awards and mileage upgrade awards on both American and US Airways marketed and operated flights<\/li>\n<li>Upgrade on American marketed and operated flights before day of departure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>American AAdvantage Second Quarter<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"pub-related-links\">\n<li>Enjoy complimentary upgrades on flights 500 miles or less on flights marketed and operated by American<\/li>\n<li>Complimentary upgrades will be auto-requested on flights marketed and operated by American and US Airways<\/li>\n<li>Complimentary upgrades on flights marketed and operated by US Airways before day of departure<\/li>\n<li>Redeem miles for upgrades on flights marketed and operated by US Airways<\/li>\n<li>Use systemwide upgrades on flights marketed and operated by US Airways<\/li>\n<li>Redeem miles for AAnytime awards on flights marketed and operated by US Airways<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can see by comparing the two Second Quarter notes for both airline loyalty program members that even then, the American AAdvantage members end up with a better deal than the Dividend Miles members.<\/p>\n<p>I think the most interesting quote I saw on all of this came from FlyerTalk. It went something like this:<em> &#8220;US employees (correctly) view this as a merger while AA employees largely view this as US employees joining their airline.&#8221;<\/em> That thought is even reitereated in the press release where it speaks of &#8220;Bringing US Airways into the award-winning <b>one<\/b>world<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> alliance&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Quite frankly, I was quite happy with US Airways before this merger&#8230; quite happy being a part of the Star Alliance&#8230; and quite happy with my status and upgrades.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Now, not so much.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>So what is my opinion?<\/strong> These changes are not in any way (other than an increased mileage bonus) <b><i>\u00a0good<\/i><\/b> for the current US elites. The current AA elites who don&#8217;t know any better are basically not affected&#8230; other than the fact that they will now be able to have the possibility of upgrades on flights of under 500 miles. This is a great help to the American flyers who live in Texas&#8230; or maybe the business flyers who live in the northeast and happen to fly shuttle flights.<\/p>\n<p>For those of us in the Dividend Miles program \u00a0(especially those of us based in the Southeast), the chanes are not so good. What has happened? We have<b> lost<\/b> an entire tier of status. We have\u00a0<b>lost<\/b> complimentary upgrades based on space available in F. We will watch flights go out with empty seats in First. We will have to essentially <strong>pay for upgrades<\/strong>. And we will be subjected to the outdated &#8216;Sticker&#8217; program where, if you fly 50K miles, you will earn 20 stickers&#8230; good for two\u00a0transcon upgrades. And if you want to take that upgraded flight, there is still no guarantee you will get it&#8230; stickers or not (as I understand it, stickers only allow you to &#8216;request&#8217; the upgrade).
