{"id":168,"date":"2015-09-14T10:20:59","date_gmt":"2015-09-14T10:20:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/explorationsguru\/?p=168"},"modified":"2015-11-10T03:36:40","modified_gmt":"2015-11-10T03:36:40","slug":"london-for-foodies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/explorationsguru\/2015\/09\/14\/london-for-foodies\/","title":{"rendered":"London For Foodies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>London is a wonderful city no matter what the time of year. \u00a0Sure, it can get cold and rainy but that&#8217;s a perfect excuse to stay inside and discover some of London&#8217;s culinary treasures. I spent a good amount of time working in London and had the chance to explore some of the local markets. I&#8217;d highly recommend checking them out if you&#8217;re looking for cost effective options!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>London&#8217;s Borough Market:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0If you&#8217;ve never been to London&#8217;s Borough Market it&#8217;s worth a visit when you&#8217;re in London. The market is full of vendors selling fresh foods, flowers, and local fare. The smells are marvellous and at times overwhelming (there are some very unusual cheese vendors!) You can find every type of food you&#8217;d ever want and a free sample of just about everything. The market is located at 8 Southwark Street. You can take the Tube to the London Bridge Station using the Northern or Jubilee lines. You&#8217;ll exit the Tube towards Borough\/High Street and then towards London Bridge Street\/Southwark St. The Market is about 1 block southwest of the tube station.<\/p>\n<p>Should you choose not to eat directly from the stalls, there are plenty of restaurants \u2013 many of which are quite busy a peak times. Baxter&#8217;s Cafe is only open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, but is worth the trip. They have really unusual lunch fare sourced directly from the market. Roast, which is located in the Floral Hall Building of the market, is often talked about as one of the better restaurants in area. However, I went for Sunday brunch and really wasn&#8217;t overly impressed. The fare is deemed &#8220;British food done well&#8221; and I&#8217;ll give it British \u2013 but not sure about the done well part. My eggs were runny for example. The restaurant was packed and locals seemed to be enjoying the traditionally British menu.<\/p>\n<p>The Turkish Deli has the largest selection of olives I&#8217;ve ever seen \u2013 and they&#8217;re good \u2013 but not cheap. I also had an amazing lamb burger at a stall called the Exotic Meat Company. There you can buy almost any type of meat \u2013 Ostrich anyone? They have a hot food grill that serves burgers and sausages. Bear&#8217;s Rotisserie has the most amazing chicken. You should check them out, but they&#8217;re only open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Now, at the start of this post I said I may be unlucky that my office is two blocks away \u2013 why unlucky you ask? Because I&#8217;ll probably visit a new stall every day I&#8217;m in London! Yeah, it&#8217;s a good and bad thing.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Nobu London:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>I love Nobu. There&#8217;s just no way around it, it&#8217;s one of my favourites. I was very excited to share a meal there with some colleagues who had never been. We started with some sushi \u2013 yellow tail and scallions, spicy tuna, salmon roll and soft crab roll. The rolls were delicious, especially the yellow tail. Then we had some rock shrimp tempura with three dipping sauces \u2013 a ponzu citrus sauce, a spicy aioli and a mildly spicy habanera pepper sauce. It&#8217;s one of my favourites and it was just as good as I had remembered. We had some great tempura vegetables \u2013 the highlight was the pumpkin. The absolute highlight of the dinner was the anticucho style Tea-smoked lamb with ancho chilli sauce. It was one of the most amazing dishes I&#8217;ve ever had. It was the first time I&#8217;ve had the dish and I can promise it won&#8217;t be the last. I&#8217;m hooked!<\/p>\n<p>One thing you might not expect at Nobu are outrageous desserts. We had the chocolate bento box \u2013 a flourless chocolate fondant cake with green tea ice cream; a fuji apple crumble \u2013 seared fuji apples with sesame oil, miso salt, toffee, peanut butter ice cream, and coconut crumble and the warm chocolate santandagi \u2013 warm chocolate filled donuts with caramelized pistachio and almond ice cream. The fuji apple crumble is absolutely amazing.<\/p>\n<p>Nobu has locations around the world, if you&#8217;re ever near one, check it out! I&#8217;ve always been a fan and this visit wasn&#8217;t any different. Nobu isn&#8217;t cheap \u2013 no matter where you are \u2013 but the London prices are exceptionally high &#8211; especially when you add drinks to the mix. The meal has made it to my list of top 10 meals of all time \u2013 yes, it was that good.\u00a0\u00a0 Located in the Mayfair district, Chef Jason Atherton \u2013 formerly of Gordon Ramsay\u2019s Maze restaurant \u2013 has created a contemporary and trendy eatery well worth its acclaim as one of London\u2019s best new restaurants.\u00a0The meal started with fresh bread, dips and Spanish olives.\u00a0 Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and made several recommendations.\u00a0 Since I have a food allergy- tomatoes- ordering was a little challenging.\u00a0Having read much about the restaurant online, I knew I had to save \u2013 or make &#8211; room for dessert.\u00a0 The dessert choices all looked amazing \u2013 and in fact, the restaurant has its own dessert bar \u2013 but I had to go with the PBJ.\u00a0 The PBJ looked amazing online, but only tasting it in person can really do it justice (my pictures certainly don\u2019t do it justice).\u00a0 The PBJ is a peanut butter parfait with cherry jam and creamed rice puffs.\u00a0 The dish also had a scoop of sorbet and fresh blackberries.\u00a0 It was as good as I had hoped and just enough sweetness to end the meal \u2013 or so I thought. \u00a0I&#8217;d highly recommend a visit to Pollen Street Social.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_183\" style=\"width: 196px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/explorationsguru\/files\/2015\/09\/Screen-Shot-2015-09-08-at-2.36.50-PM.png\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-183\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-183 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/explorationsguru\/files\/2015\/09\/Screen-Shot-2015-09-08-at-2.36.50-PM-186x300.png\" alt=\"PB &amp; J dessert \" width=\"186\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/explorationsguru\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/70\/\/sites\/70\/2015\/09\/Screen-Shot-2015-09-08-at-2.36.50-PM-186x300.png 186w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/explorationsguru\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/70\/\/sites\/70\/2015\/09\/Screen-Shot-2015-09-08-at-2.36.50-PM.png 253w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 186px) 100vw, 186px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-183\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PB &amp; J dessert<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>London is a wonderful city no matter what the time of year. \u00a0Sure, it can get cold and rainy but that&#8217;s a perfect excuse to&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":182,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mi_skip_tracking":false},"categories":[3,9,33],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.13 -
