When In Carolina, Eat The BBQ (Even At The Airport!)

I love BBQ. And after tasting the “NC” sauce at Slows BBQ in Detroit, I discovered that Carolina BBQ might just be my overall favorite style (though I’m not ready to concede that just yet). So while I was in North Carolina this week, I had a pretty serious craving for BBQ.¬†Unfortunately I was in Greensboro, and none of my clients seem to know of a good place to get BBQ in Greensboro. I’m still not convinced, but I was out of luck for this particular trip. If you know of a place, I’d love to hear about it though!

Fortunately, while making my way through Charlotte Airport (CLT) during my short connection, I happened to spot this out of the corner of my eye:

I checked the time, and had just enough of it to stop and satisfy my BBQ craving!

My overall take? I’ve certainly had better BBQ… much better BBQ. But for a quick stop at an airport, Brookwood Farms’ Carolina Pit BBQ has some pretty decent ‘cue!

I ordered the BBQ Pork sandwich, with broccoli and tomato salad as my side:

The pulled pork was good – it had a hint of smokiness, some charred pieces mixed throughout, and it wasn’t drenched in sauce… just how I like it! Sure the flavors could’ve been a bit stronger, but it was really tasty – and I especially appreciated that they added the sauce on top, rather than having the meat sitting in it. Just the right amount of spicy, vinegar-tanginess, without being gloopy or overpowering.

The salad was also quite good – the crunchy broccoli and the creamy dressing were both nice compliments to the sandwich, but in very different ways. I would’ve loved to try one of the richer sides (especially the mac and cheese), but that’ll have to wait for another time.

If you find yourself at Charlotte Airport (CLT) with a little bit of time, and a big ole BBQ craving – this is the place for you. Don’t expect it to rival what you’d find at a truly authentic BBQ joint (read: not in an airport), but do expect something ¬†that will really hit the spot, and is much better than your average airport food.

What’s your favorite place to eat at CLT? Any other places I should make a point of checking out next time I’m there?

Next time you are in the vicinity of GSO, Google Little Richards BBQ. Its towards Winston Salem, but I thought it was worth the drive.

I’m glad you enjoyed my airport. Are you on FlyerTalk? there is a CLT BBQ DO coming up in a month. I don’t eat the stuff, but the place in the atrium is popular.

I am (handle = “milesmuncher”). Sounds like a good time, but unfortunately I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to get down around that time.
