It’s easy to resign yourself to crappy fast food when you’re on a long drive and just looking to get to your final destination as quickly as you possibly can. I can understand that inclination, but if you find yourself driving on Route 22, about an hour north of New York City, make sure to pull over if you see this sign:
That’s Big W’s Roadside Bar-B-Q, and it just might be the best BBQ you’re going to find north of NYC!
It doesn’t matter what you like, because Big W has it all: brisket, ribs, pulled pork, chicken, wings, and much more (and it’s all out of this world good). My first visit was with some friends to pick up dinner on our way out of the city for a long weekend getaway. We got a whole mess of ribs and brisket, but since we still had a bit of a drive to go before we could sit down to dinner, I decided I had to get a little something more for the car ride.
“Little” might be a bit of a mischaracterization – I got the “sensible” sized pulled pork sandwich, and it just about filled the styrofoam container. It was also one of the best pulled pork sandwiches I’ve ever had! Most of the time, I find pulled pork is too saucy and gloppy, and you can’t even really taste the meat. This was the exact opposite: smokey meat with a delicious “bark“, and just a little sauce on the side to add as you see fit. And they pile on more meat than a sandwich roll can possibly hold. Please excuse me for a moment while I reflect on the deliciousness of this sandwich…
Ok we’re back!
The magic happens in the smoker, which is in a shed right next to the restaurant:
They don’t mess around!
The decor isn’t anything fancy, but it’s certainly a step up from the original location: a truck on the side of the road, just a few miles from the current location!
Big W’s is all about the food, and that’s my kind of place. It’s been added to my “must stop” list for road trips north of NYC. If you get a chance to visit, I’m sure it’ll make it onto yours as well!
