The competition continues to heat up on the premium transcon routes!
A little while ago, American announced a bonus to promote the new A321s they’re flying between JFK-LAX and JFK-SFO (though the bonus only applies to JFK-LAX). Points Summary just got a sneak peek inside one of these new planes.
United has matched this promotion (though they’ve included JFK-SFO), and is offering 5,000-15,000 bonus miles for each roundtrip taken between JFK-SFO and JFK-LAX (minimum fare classes apply).
The following fare classes earn bonuses (these are for roundtrips – one ways earn half the bonus):
- BusinessFirst (fare classes J, C, D, Z, P) = 15,000 bonus miles
- Full-Fare Economy (fare classes Y, B) = 10,000 bonus miles
- Economy (fare classes M, E, U, H, Q, V, W, S) = 5,000 bonus miles
- The promotion refers to these as “selected discounted Economy”, but only “S” is actually a discount fare. “W” and above are regular / mid-level economy fares
The promotion is for flights booked between December 16 and March 31, and taken between January 7 and March 31, and registration is required.
I quite like United’s new p.s. product and reviewed my first experience in EconomyPlus a few weeks ago. I’m looking forward to this promotion because I do occasionally book “S” or higher fares when I’m traveling for business (almost never for personal travel), and I think I may have a few trips that will fall within the promotional period. Even if you don’t expect that you will, it doesn’t hurt to register because you never know how your plans might change in the coming months.
Let’s see how long it takes Delta, JetBlue and/or Virgin America to match…
