In case you are unaware, American Express is taking away American Airlines and US Airways lounge access as a benefit for the American Express Platinum card starting March 22, 2014.
As a courtesy for this loss, they have offered to give credit for any AA or US incidental charges after March 22 ranging from $100 to $500. Well, I found out I only received $100 and was not too happy. I asked the rep when I called how the amount was determined and she stated it was based on how much I spent on these airlines with the card. Well since i didn’t spend anything, the low credit of $100 was determined.
I expressed to her that I was not happy about only getting $100 as I valued airport lounge access more than this and she stated that she could offer me an additional $100 statement credit as a goodwill gesture which would post in a few days. She also stated that there will be another added benefit to be coming shortly. Well an extra $100 did make me feel better so I took both offers and said thank you for her service.
Within a few days, I noticed a credit on my statement.
Overall, I appreciated their willingness to “make it right” and I am very curious as to what the new benefit will be. So if you only received $100, it doesn’t hurt to call and express your discontentment if you feel that this amount is not satisfactory.
$100? You’re lucky. Lots of us got a fat lump of coal. So if you spent zero on those airlines, that can’t be the sole criterion.
I suggest calling them and expressing how disatisfied you are with getting nothing. you may be offered something but you won’t know if you don’t call!
yes, I received my fat lump of coal a few days ago as well. Very disappointing.
I was told just now that the added benefit for next year will be another $100 in addition to the $200 incidental airline fee credit.
She said it was an offer I was targeted for. No statement credit / nada for now. Granted, since meeting my minimum spend I’ve only put $400 on the card.
Well I just recently finished my min spend of 10k so maybe that helped in the goodwill credit but not sure. Ill see what the new benefit will be to see if worth keeping my card.
I never got the email but called yesterday and was told I get $200. I asked if they could do better and was offered either a $20 statement credit or 1,600 points. Took the credit and went to McDonalds. I’m loving it!

Well I was planning on keeping the card anyway, so I’ll take any free money they throw my way. I will probably cancel my wife’s card though, but I’m still thinking about it. Need to make a decision before the 20% Avios transfer bonus ends on 12/31/13 as she doesn’t have any other MR earning cards.
Another thing to consider besides the free $100 is the new access to the, albeit limited, AmEx Centurion Lounges. I’m looking forward to checking out the Vegas location tomorrow!
I’ve tried both so far and the Dallas location is the best buy far! Hope they open many more locations soon! Have fun in Vegas 🙂
After reading your blog, I called AMEX and was given only a $100 credit. I waited until Monday and recalled and was again told no they could not offer more. I asked to speak to a supervisor and she said the same thing just more sugar in her voice. I said I would like to speak to her supervisor. The Supervisor got on the phone and after reviewing my long history with AMEX, she gave me a $150 statement credit in addition to the 100 credit that will kick in in March for lost lounge access.
