Amex Platinum Card Confirmed my $100 Credit and is the Card Still Worth Keeping?

American Express sent me an email confirming that I would be given a $100 statement credit for American Airlines & US Airways incidental fees because I had previously called stating how I was not pleased with the card getting rid of AA and US lounge access starting March 22, 2014.

Amex platinum email

I’m glad that they confirmed via email but as my card’s annual fee is due soon I am contemplating still canceling the card because I’ve redeemed my $200 airline incremental fee credit for the year and I have gotten global entry which the card reimburses you for. Yes I will be missing out on the DFW and LAS Centurion Lounges but is it worth the $450 annual fee? I am already getting the Priority Pass with my Hilton Surpass card, Admiral Lounge access with my new AA Exec Amex card, and Lounge Club with my Chase Ink card so I think I’m covered.

There is currently a public offer of 40,000 bonus miles after 3k in spend within the first 3 months but is it still worth it after they remove AA and US lounge access?

  1. I’m keeping ours cause both me and my wife will get $200 each and we have about 414,000 points parked in our accounts so I’m paying $50 net to keep the points flexible and still get Centurion access. You can come in as our guest!

I’m in the same predicament – just got the $100 letter. I have a business gold card I can move the points to (and potentially upgrade to platinum sometime in the future).

I’ve gotten spoiled enjoying the card, but am also contemplating cancelling it.

which other card gives you Priority Lounge access?

  3. Do you know of anyone receiving the credit without calling?

I believe some did but this happened a while ago. So if you didn’t receive an email, I suggest you call them to explain how you are unhappy you are about the discontinued access and see if they will give you a “goodwill” stmt credit or something like that.

  4. There is a huge distinction between the Amex Platinum Priority Pass and Hilton Surpass Priority Pass. With the Amex plan, you get into the Priority Pass lounges for FREE. With the Hilton Surpass plan, you have to pay $27 per visit.

Unless something big changes I will be getting rid of minor after having it like forever. I have priority pass through my national car benefit and as a delta diamond that only leaves the amex lounges which are getting crowded and only in a few places. Right now the value I just can’t justify. I think more benefits maybe coming but if they don’t I for one will cancel.
