Rome Doubles Accommodation Tax

I just checked out of my hotel in Rome at the Hotel Indigo which I used to pay with points and was informed that I needed to pay the accommodation tax for my stay . I was surprised by having to pay this much (or at all since I was using points) and was told that a new tax increase went into effect Sept 1, 2014 and it is per person per night. Below is the picture of the different rates. You can also go to this website to see the rates better.

Update: Readers in the comments stated that these taxes were waived for other hotel properties in Rome when using points. I guess I just got unlucky and got stuck with the hotel that passed the taxes on to their customers. This tax is still applicable for people paying for rooms.

There are exemptions for children under 10 and residents of Rome but if you are a tourist and staying at hotels, B&Bs, etc and even staying with points, be prepared to pay this extra tax.

This reminds me of what a tour guide joked about, “You’ve heard of the saying all roads lead to Rome, well so do all taxes”
