I just checked out of my hotel in Rome at\u00a0the Hotel Indigo\u00a0which I used to pay with points and was informed that I needed to pay the accommodation tax for my stay\u00a0. I was surprised by having to pay this much\u00a0(or at all since I was using points)\u00a0and was told that a new tax increase went into effect Sept 1, 2014 and it is per person per night<\/strong>. Below is the picture of the different rates. You can also go to this website <\/a>to see the rates better.<\/p>\n

Update: Readers in the comments stated that these taxes were waived for other hotel properties in Rome when using points. I guess I just got unlucky and got stuck with the hotel that passed the taxes on to their customers. This tax is still applicable for people paying for rooms.<\/p>\n

\"Rome<\/a>There are exemptions for children under 10 and residents of Rome but if you are a tourist and staying at hotels, B&Bs, etc and even staying with points, be prepared to pay this extra tax.<\/p>\n

This reminds me of what a\u00a0tour guide joked about, “You’ve heard of the saying all roads lead to Rome, well so do all taxes”<\/p>\n
