When people think of Colombia, they think of the stigma of cartels and corruption. Of course this was rightfully so as at one point the city of Medellin was listed as one of the most dangerous cities in the world.<\/p>\n

Colombia today is much different than it had been and there are many places to fall in love with in this beautiful country. One such place is Guatap\u00e9, Colombia.<\/p>\n

Color Heaven<\/strong><\/p>\n

Walking into the plaza of the town, the pristine white church and the multi color businesses just draw you in!<\/p>\n

\nThere is also a little courtyard near the plaza where you will find brightly colored steps surrounded by business where you can get a drink or a snack. You may even find some local entertainment there.<\/p>\n

You could spend hours just walking around town taking pictures, visiting local shops, and just taking in the uniqueness the place has to offer.<\/p>\n

This could easily be one of the most colorful places in the world. I found a list of other colorful places<\/a> which Guatape was not on but it should be!<\/p>\n

The Rock<\/strong><\/p>\n

Another famous nearby attraction is the Rock of Guatape, (El Pe\u00f1on de Guatape) also called El Pe\u00f1ol or La Piedra. This privately owned rock is like a thumb sticking out of the ground with stairs for you to climb up to the top. The price to access the rock is currently $18,000 COP (~ $5USD). There are about 700+ steps and is not for the weary. The views make the climb worth it plus there are shops near the top where you could get a souvenir or a cold brew.<\/p>\n

Tour from Medellin<\/strong><\/p>\n

I took a tour from Medellin with a group called Tours Guatape<\/a>\u00a0which I highly recommend.\u00a0 For $79,000 COP or ~$30USD you get bus transportation to Guatape from Medellin and back\u00a0with stops along the way, a light breakfast and hearty lunch, a boat tour on the lake, and Spanish and English tour guides. The tour lasts all day and does not cover the cost of climbing the rock. It was such a great value in my opinion and I encourage you to visit this wonderful town.<\/p>\n
