{"id":1662,"date":"2016-03-30T06:59:07","date_gmt":"2016-03-30T13:59:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/milespointsreselling\/?p=1662"},"modified":"2016-03-30T06:59:07","modified_gmt":"2016-03-30T13:59:07","slug":"lessons-learned-from-least-successful-credit-card-churn-ever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/milespointsreselling\/2016\/03\/30\/lessons-learned-from-least-successful-credit-card-churn-ever\/","title":{"rendered":"Lessons Learned From Least Successful Credit Card Churn Ever"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two weeks ago I applied for 4 credit cards. \u00a0I am keeping things modest given the MS landscape these days. \u00a0I applied for:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Chase Southwest Business Card<\/li>\n<li>Chase Southwest Personal Card<\/li>\n<li>Barclay Arrival Plus<\/li>\n<li>Citi American Airlines Business Card<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Eventually I was approved for Citi AA Business Card and the Chase SW Personal. \u00a0I was outright denied on the Barclay Arrival and I am still waiting approval on SW Business. \u00a0In the process, I did learn a few things that I wanted to share.<\/p>\n<p>First, \u00a0In the past I could pretty easily churn cards with Barclay. \u00a0With the US Airways card for example, I would wait at least 6 months between cards, cancel the first one, wait a day, then apply for a new US Airways card. \u00a0I assumed that pattern would also hold true for the Barclay Arrival Plus card. \u00a0About a year ago I downgraded my Arrival Plus to an Arrival to avoid the annual fee. \u00a0The day before my churn I canceled the Arrival card. \u00a0Long story short it turns out that Barclay did not even pull my credit and straight up denied me because I previously had the product. \u00a0I called their recon line to ask what was up. \u00a0They told me that because I have just closed the same product within 30 days they could not approve me per policy. \u00a0The CSR explained that because I could reopen the closed account within 30 days I needed to wait that long before applying for the Arrival Plus. \u00a0Lessen learned here:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For Barclay&#8217;s cards cancel at least 30 days prior application for new card.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Second, Chase\u00a0can be hit or miss in dealing with them. \u00a0I did get an email about two weeks after my churn approving the personal card. \u00a0However, the week prior I got a denial on the business card. \u00a0So I called their recon line. \u00a0Or at least I attempted to, because I kept getting an automated voice message saying the office was closed. \u00a0\u00a0I called 3 or 4 times during various days and times and did not get an answer. \u00a0I eventually called at 5:00 AM PST and got an answer. \u00a0It was not a fun call. \u00a0Here is a sample of a couple\u00a0questions I was asked.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Ok, so I got asked about a card that I&#39;m an authorized user on that was opened a year ago&#8230;back on hold.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; MilesPointsReselling (@pdxtraveltips) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pdxtraveltips\/status\/714793404681445376\">March 29, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&quot;I see you&#39;ve had 6 credit cards in 6 months why?&quot; Oh come on I know people with way more!<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; MilesPointsReselling (@pdxtraveltips) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pdxtraveltips\/status\/714795515397799936\">March 29, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the phone call was not successful. \u00a0After 26 minutes on the phone, the CSR sent the application up for further review. Lessen learned here:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wait with Chase, don&#8217;t call recon line.<\/li>\n<li>Consider lowering credit limits on existing Chase cards prior to applications to improve odds of instant approval.<\/li>\n<li>If you have to call have good reason for all the cards you have recently applied for.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Last, \u00a0Citi is my new favorite bank. \u00a0They have become really easy to deal with compared to Chase. \u00a0In years past the opposite was\u00a0true. \u00a0The AA business card was approved within a week after my application. \u00a0Citi called me to inform me that the card was approved but they needed to move some credit line around final approval. \u00a0 They needed permission to do that hence the pleasant phone call. Lessen learned here:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cancel or lower credit limits with Citi prior to applications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This last lesson is actually something that I&#8217;ve known, I just forgot to do it. \u00a0I also think it is something that is a good habit to get into prior to applying for any additional cards with a bank. \u00a0My experience is that most banks are looking at the total credit line they have already extended to you. \u00a0If you are at the max, then you will not get an instant approval and a phone call may be in order to get the approval done. \u00a0Lowering your credit line can help ease the process a bit.<\/p>\n<p>In the end this could still end up being a really successful churn if the SW business card gets approved. \u00a0If not, oh well, live and learn. \u00a0The hobby is constantly evolving and so must we.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two weeks ago I applied for 4 credit cards. \u00a0I am keeping things modest given the MS landscape these days. \u00a0I applied for: Chase Southwest&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":95,"featured_media":1666,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mi_skip_tracking":false,"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_is_tweetstorm":false,"jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":true,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","enabled":false}}},"categories":[2],"tags":[],"jetpack_publicize_connections":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.13 -
