I just booked my first Avios ticket last week! From NorCal its only 4,500 each way to SEA (and PDX). Opens up a whole new world of possibilities with partner Alaska Airlines 🙂
Jamison, I think she has a good point. Alaska opens up a lot of possibilities. For example, LAX-SMA for 4500 one way (putting you in Napa wine country), or LAX-YVR 9500 one way.

since SFO isn’t a big AA hub, there aren’t many good uses for Avios. best one is probably SFO-LAX 😉

Why limit yourself to AA? Alaska is a BA partner and there are good choices using Avios on AS – for both LAX and SFO fliers, AS is much better than AA.
I received 100k avios miles almost by accident after opening a new credit card. The only place I fly to these days is Medellin, Colombia. I noticed this thread because I live near LAX. Can anyone point out to me a way to use these miles to go there? I know AA flies to Miami, so maybe that would work.
