The Sights and Sounds of Atlanta Georgia

I had just arrived at Atlanta International Airport from Cleveland and only had less than 1 hour to connect for my flight to Los Angeles. My flight was actually delayed by 5 minutes from CLE to ATL, so during taxiing to my gate, I rebooked my Delta Delayed Flight Using the iPhone App. In May, I wrote about Finding Alternate Flight Routings Without Speaking To An Agent On Your Delayed Delta Flight. I rebooked my flight leaving me with 6 hours to spend in Atlanta without invoking my love and hate relationship with Delta’s Same Day Confirmed Policy.

I took the MARTA light rail from Atlanta Airport to the Five Points Metro Station located in downtown Atlanta.

Around the Five Points Station was the Underground Atlanta which houses shopping and entertainment.

I headed South on Peachtree Street and realized that I was going into the wrong direction. The Southern part of Peachtree was run down with a lot of discount stores and empty shopping centers.

I headed North of the Five Points neighborhood and stumbled upon Woodruff Park.

In Woodruff Park, there were people playing life sized chess and exercising Tai-Chi.

Kids can also play on the park playground which is shaped with the letters ATL which I thought was very creative.

The best part about Woodruff Park was the magnificent fountain display located in the center.

If you need a haircut, you can head to Good Phellaz Barber Shop located across the street from the park.

I continued heading North on Peachtree and reached the heart of Atlanta’s financial district.

I found an interesting red parking meter in downtown Atlanta which says “Give change that makes sense”. “Please do not give cash to panhandlers. A donation will provide help for the homeless”. I found this amazing and wish more cities would have these stationed all around.

I had lunch at Broad Street which is a local favorite for many downtown office workers and Georgia State University students. Many restaurants and shops are lined up on Broad Street SW.

  1. I just got back from Atlanta yesterday. Three different Atlantans told me that Underground Atlanta has become a place to be avoided…too many sketchy persons there.

And, it seems that every other street in that city is named some variant of “Peachtree”.
