The Sights and Sounds of the Baltic Herring Festival in Helsinki

 

The Baltic Herring Festival is a popular seafood festival in Helsinki that lasts for about a week in early October. The Baltic Herring Festival takes place in Market Square which is also called the Kauppatori in Finnish. There are all sorts of Baltic Herring that you can buy as well as arts and crafts. You can also buy fish that are hand caught by fisherman.

It’s only a 10 to 15 minute walk to Market Square (Kauppatori) from the main central Railway Square.

You can find fisherman selling their wares from a boat that is docked on the Baltic Sea.

I tried some pan fried Baltic Herring from a boat called Fina-Lotta. It was my first time having baltic herring and it was delicious.

There were also full service restaurants being operated from small and large boats.

There are also small handicrafts and souvenirs being sold from vendors in Market Square.

There are also food vendors selling freshly made waffles and Finnish bread.

If you need a larger serving of food, visit one of the many vendor stalls cooking up fresh seafood such as Baltic herring and salmon.
