Is Buenos Aires Argentina Safe For Tourists?

There’s a lot of talk on the internet about the safety of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Throughout my three nights and four days in Buenos Aires, I’ve walked pretty much everywhere and it was perfectly safe. In addition, I took taxis, buses, commuter trains, and the Subte (subway).

There’s a lot of graffiti in almost every barrio (neighborhood) and it’s perfectly normal to see that. There’s nothing to be afraid of.

The only thing I would warn you about is to not venture into Barrio La Boca during the evening because crime is pretty high there. I walked all the way from Retiro to Caminito in La Boca during the day and it was pretty safe.

Another area to avoid is Retiro around the main train station area during the evenings because it becomes a dodgy neighborhood. All sorts of interesting characters come out at night and it’s best to avoid it at night.

Enjoy Buenos Aires and have a great time!

  1. Well for what’s it worth I have never had any problems in my life…. But on my last trip to Buenos Aires I got robbed in Palermo at 2pm in the afternoon. They took my watch before I had realized what was going on and were off on a bike. Luckily it was a fake watch….. According to the police that happens multiple times a day. So don’t wear expensive (looking) stuff would be my lesson….

  2. I lived in BA for 3 months and it’s perfectly fine. It’s not really graffiti either, it’s street art and the community is thriving. Retiro and La Boca are both perfectly safe, but you shouldn’t be flaunting money in these areas (e.g don’t carry massive expensive cameras around) at night time.

I hope you ate at Las Cabras in Palermo.

  3. Hey. I’m a New Yorker who walks around with his guard up all the time. My wife and I almost got robbed by a nice young couple. They squirted some green dye that looked like bird poop, then pretended to wipe it off. We both had our wits about ourselves. I kept my hand in my pocket and my wife tightly clutched her bag. They kept spinning us around to ‘clean us’ and disorient us. We were lucky this time. I pity the person that doesn’t have their guard up. If this could happen to us… it could happen to you.

I will not be heading back to EZE.
