The Sights and Sounds of La Merced in Mexico City

La Merced is known for its enormous shopping. Basically everyone who lives in Mexico City come here for cheap and inexpensive goods for personal or business use. It’s basically one large swap meet and it’s easy to get lost within the labyrinth. La Merced is also famous for its red light district and prostitution is legal in this Mexico City neighborhood because it’s considered a tolerance zone. I also got a chance to visit the Mercado Sonora which is a marketplace for witchcraft.

I took the Mexico City subway to the La Merced metro station. The station is basically located underneath the labyrinth of stores so be aware of your location on the GPS in case you want to return to the subway.

La Merced is also home to many small restaurants and street food vendors.

I used my iPhone’s GPS to locate the main sidewalk to try and get to the Sonora marketplace which was two blocks away. Once you get outside to the main streets of La Merced, you can find more or less the same type of vendors. In this case, there were plenty of counterfeit Michael Kors purses for sale.

The Sonora marketplace is a place where people go for voodoo and witchcraft. It’s basically all tied it with Santa Muerte (the Patron Saint of Death).

There are animals for sale which can be used as a sacrifice or a ritual.

There are even small restaurants inside Mercado Sonora if you need to grab a bite.

In one corridor, you can find Santa Muerte greeting shoppers.

lamerced15

There are a lot of Santa Muerte (Saint Death) souvenirs for sale.

You can also buy various potions to aid with your witchcraft.

In addition, there are also voodoo dolls. Each shop has its own shaman who can perform voodoo services on your target for fee of course.
