The Sights and Sounds of Geylang in Singapore

The Geylang neighborhood of Singapore is most famous for its Red Light District. During the night, streetwalkers and their pimps occupy the streets of Lor 7 Geylang – Lor 15 Geylang. Most of the prostitutes in Singapore hang out near Lor 10 Geylang and Talma Road in the evenings.

On my first night in Singapore, I happened to stay at the Fragrance Sunflower Hotel which was located in the red light district. There’s always a catch when booking a budget accommodation and I always seem to find myself in the red light districts. Here are some pictures of the prostitution area during the day. I learned not to take pictures of the action during the night since my photo incident in Bogota, Colombia.

The Geylang neighborhood is also famous for hourly hotels due to rampant prostitution. By the way, prostitution is legal in Singapore and most of them come from Malaysia and China. I saw a few Indian female streetwalkers as well.

Housing is really inexpensive in the Geylang district of Singapore and it’s mostly comprised of locals since I did not see tourists in this neighborhood.

There is plenty of inexpensive shopping and places of worship on Geylang Road. There is even an Islamic college.

It’s not uncommon to find street vending machines in the Geylang district because I did not see them anywhere else in Singapore.

The best part about the Geylang neighborhood is the inexpensive eateries. The best thing to eat in Geylang is the claypot frog porridge which locals rave about. Locals like to call places like these coffee shops because they’re mostly open all day.

The Geylang district is very active during the night time and most restaurants are open 24 hours including small convenience stores.

Did I mention that you can find 24 hour Singapore eats in Geylang at hawker stall level prices?
