Trip Report: San Pedro Sula Honduras – Most Dangerous Place on Earth

Earlier this year, I wrote that I Booked a Flight to the Most Dangerous Country in the World. According to the Daily Mail UK, they wrote an article titled “The most dangerous place on earth? San Pedro Sula in Honduras – where three people are murdered EVERY DAY – tops list of the world’s most violent cities”. I really wanted to find out for myself if San Pedro Sula, Honduras was the most dangerous place on Earth outside of a warzone.

I needed to deplete my Delta Skymiles account due to the major devaluations and what better way than spend it on a trip to a new country. I had never been to Honduras in my life and I saw that there was award availability. I booked LAX-ATL-SAP-ATL-CVG-LAX using 47,500 Delta Skymiles + $27.50 in taxes for travel in economy class.

I was upgraded on every leg due to my Delta Gold Medallion status which has a benefit of upgrades on award tickets. However, I did not like my return flight to Los Angeles which I had to connect through Atlanta and overnight in Cincinnati. Flights were looking full, so there was no way I would be able to Same Day Confirm or even Same Day Standby for the direct ATL-LAX leg.

I didn’t want to pay for a hotel in Cincinnati on an overnight layover, so I decided to throw away my Delta return ticket and burn 25,000 American Airlines miles instead on a Business/First Class ticket one-way ticket from SAP-MIA-CLT-LAX. The American flight was from SAP-MIA and the US Airways flights were MIA-CLT and CLT-LAX.

I decided to spend two nights and three days in San Pedro Sula just to get a feel of the city. I spent one night at the InterContinental Real San Pedro Sula Hotel and one night at the Hilton Princess San Pedro Sula Hotel which I used American Airlines miles to book.
