How to Get From Sao Paulo to Guarulhos Airport on Public Transit

Previously I’ve written How to Get From Guarulhos Airport to Sao Paulo via Public Transit because I was sick and tired of getting ripped off from taxi drivers at GRU airport. I wrote the guide because it was hard to find public transportation information on how to take the bus or metro from GRU airport to Sao Paulo. Here are directions on how to get from Sao Paulo to GRU Airport using public transit.

Step 1. Buy a single journey metro subway ticket from the ticket booth cashier or ticket machine for 3.50 Brasilian Reais ~ $1.26 USD.

Note that the Sao Paulo metro system does not run 24 hours. The operating hours of the metro station is 4:40am to 12:33am from Sunday to Friday. The metro runs from 4:40am to 1:00am on Saturdays.

Step 2. Make your journey to Tatuape metro station and be sure to study the Sao Paulo Metro Map beforehand!

Step 3. You will arrive at Tatuape metro station where you’ll need to exit the station and head to the ground level.

There’s also a small inexpensive snack stand outside the bus stop if you’re hungry.

Step 4. You will know you are at the right area if you see the bus stop sign with lines 257 (Guarulhos Aeroporto Internacional (via Ayrton Senna) and 299 (Guarulhos Aeroporto Internacional (via Assis Ribeiro).

Step 5. Buy a bus ticket from the driver for 3.50 Reais ~ $1.26 USD.

Note that the EMTU Airport Bus Service does not run 24 hours, so be sure to plan accordingly.

Here is the timetable for Line 257, Guarulhos Aeroporto Internacional via Ayrton Senna (5:00am – 12:10am):

Here is the timetable for Line 299, Guarulhos Aeroporto Internacional via Assis Ribeiro (4:55am – 10:00pm):

If you have a 6am or 7am flight at GRU International Airport, you’ll need to make sure to catch the last bus at 12:10am. You’ll save money this way, but be prepared for a 6 or 7 hour layover at GRU Airport where it’ll look like a homeless shelter.
