Delta Targets Former Elites with Free Platinum Medallion Status and Sky Club Access

I received an email yesterday from Delta Air Lines with the subject title “Jamison, You’ve Been Award Platinum Status”. I haven’t flown Delta at all this year and have let my Gold Medallion elite status elapse in 2014. Back in 2013, I wrote Why I’m Ending My Relationship With Delta Airlines For Good. In 2014, I wrote Why I’m Still Flying On Delta Air Lines (For Now) but stopped completely after using up all my miles for award tickets.

When I saw the e-mail, I was quite intrigued on why Delta would want to have me back as a customer since they’ve basically gutted their award chart and imposed revenue requirements for Medallion elite status. The e-mail read: Go Platinum. Complimentary upgrades. Waived baggage fees. A Delta Sky Club® membership. This is how you deserve to travel. That’s why we’re offering you Platinum Medallion® status plus access to over 200 Delta Sky Club locations worldwide. Accept this exclusive offer by July 16, 2015, and see how Delta is setting a new standard at LAX.”

At the very top of the e-mail it said “Not for all of L.A.—just a select few” which meant it was targeted to former and current Delta Medallion members in the Los Angeles area.

Here’s a link to register for the promotion: https://www.delta.com/mypromos/acelanding.action?offer=GOPLATINUMLA

However there is a catch to this promotion – Complimentary Platinum Medallion status is only good for 2 months from the date of registration. Along with the newly acquired status, it also comes with two months of complimentary Delta Sky Club Lounge membership.

There’s also an offer to stay Platinum all year whereas if you book and fly one transoceanic or transcontinental Delta One™ round trip within two months of registration to keep your status and Delta Sky Club membership until January 31, 2016. We’ll also give you 15,000 bonus miles.

Needless to say, there’s absolutely no way I am going back to Delta and I have no plan to fly them or any Skyteam carrier within the next two months or for the rest of the year for that matter.

However, I did register for this promotion just for kicks and giggles since it’s non transferrable. After successfully registering, I received the message, “CONGRATULATIONS. YOU’RE OUR NEWEST PLATINUM MEDALLION® MEMBER. We are excited to award you Platinum Medallion status along with a complimentary Delta Sky Club® membership. To keep your status and membership until January 31, 2016, and receive 15,000 bonus miles, book and fly one transoceanic or transcontinental Delta One™ round trip2 in the next two months. When you fly with a Delta One ticket, you’ll also have access to our exclusive Delta ONESM at LAX premium check-in experience.”

I refreshed the Delta website and instantly became a Platinum Medallion member.

I even checked “My Wallet” on Delta.com and it showed that I had 1 Skymiles and Delta Sky Club Membership Cards which reflected my 2 months of complimentary Sky Club access.

  1. I received the same offer in the mail today. However, I have never been a Delta elite! How do they know I am a disaffected UA 1K? They must be psychic! I am definitely interested if I can get regular upgrades on LAX-NYC. United is making that hella difficult on their PS service.

    • wow, that’s crazy that you received this offer when you’ve never been a Delta elite. I guess they’re just targeting frequent flyers in the LA area, but I’m not sure how they knew you were a disaffected 1K! Let me know if you plan on taking up Delta on this offer!

  2. Just applied for this promotion right the day before it expired. I can say is this way perfect timing!! I have many flights scheduled for the next 2 months and am pretty excited bout this.

As of my status: I flew round the world trip with delta for 1 month and when got back to LA, got this promotion.

I will keep ya posted how if I get upgraded or no, or the perks.
