Narita holds a special place in my heart because it was actually my first ever international layover in my travel career. I was a travel noob back then and was scared of pretty much everything from solo dining and not taking any kind of risk in my life. This was my first time eating anything authentic in Japan. Cuisine in Narita town is most famous for their broiled eel. Great sushi is to be had in Tokyo city center, but if you\u2019re in Narita, you must try the broiled eel.<\/p>\n

Right off the Keisei Main Line Narita Station was several ramen shops. I wanted to have some authentic Japanese ramen as my first meal in Japan.<\/p>\n

The ramen shop was small and the seating layout was in a U-shape.<\/p>\n

I was sitting down and waiting for service, but there isn\u2019t any. There was one lone employee who is the cook and he didn\u2019t speak a lick of English. He used hand gestures and pointed me to a vending machine.<\/p>\n

I was astounded when I found out I had to order from a ramen vending machine. Upon taking a closer look, there were some pictures and I inserted seven 100 yen coins and chose a random dish that cost 700 yen\u00a0 ~ $6.90 USD.<\/p>\n

A receipt printed out and I handed it over to the chef. 5 minutes later, I had a bowl of delicious piping hot ramen.<\/p>\n

While walking in Narita town, I found a Japanese restaurant that was serving the famous broiled eel.<\/p>\n

I went to take a seat and the waitress gestured at me and placed a plastic bag in front of me. I was like \u201cWhat the heck is that doing on the table?\u201d She didn\u2019t speak any English as well and gestured that I should take off my shoes and place it in the plastic bag. I was definitely in a total culture shock as I\u2019ve never removed my shoes prior to having a meal.<\/p>\n

I ordered the broiled eel dish with rice and it came out to a whopping 2,300 yen ~ $22.68 USD. I\u2019ve learned that nothing is ever cheap in Japan.<\/p>\n

The waitress brought over some tea and a set of chopsticks while I waited for my main entr\u00e9e.<\/p>\n

The broiled eel with rice came with miso soup and Japanese pickled cabbage.<\/p>\n

The miso soup was excellent, but the broiled eel was to die for. The eel was bursting in flavor and melted in my mouth.<\/p>\n

For dessert, I went to a place in Narita town that served Japanese pancakes with filling. The price was 100 yen ~ $0.98 USD each. It was a delicious sweet treat.<\/p>\n

I was intrigued by the Japanese vending machines plastered all over the streets, so I decided to give one a whirl. I needed some caffeine and went with coffee. Needless to say, it came out hot!<\/p>\n

I was extremely full by now, but I couldn\u2019t resist trying one more snack. There was a shop right by Keisei Narita Station with an octopus logo.<\/p>\n

I was curious and ordered an octopus on a stick (Takokushi) which was 100 yen ~ $0.98 USD. There were also other items such Takoyaki (octopus ball), Yakisoba (Stir noodle), and Takopettan (original octopus pancake). It was pretty chewy and a great way to end my Narita foodie adventure.<\/p>\n
