As I\u2019ve mentioned before, downtown Asuncion has an abundant amount of plazas which are also dubbed as parks. It\u2019s a great place for locals to get together to sell goods out in the open market. Paraguayans also love to sit out in the green space and pass time by sipping on their terere.<\/p>\n

Across the street from Plaza Juan E. O\u2019leary<\/a> is another park in centro Asuncion called Plaza de La Democracia which features an underground Galeria.<\/p>\n

Plaza de La Democracia is vastly similar to Plaza Juan E. O\u2019leary in a sense that there are vendors selling local handicraft goods.<\/p>\n

Plaza de La Democracia vendors sell more or less the same items, but I found prices to be better at Plaza Juan E. O\u2019leary.<\/p>\n

I went underground to scope out the galleria, but it was pretty dead. There was basically a small jewelry shop and a store where you can photocopy documents.<\/p>\n

However, I did find an adjacent public restroom which is guarded by a woman. She was armed with soap in a plastic bottle with toilet paper on hand.<\/p>\n

There was a sign saying that it costs 1,000 Paraguayan Guarani ~ $0.21 USD to use the restroom. In addition, there was a sign saying the police officers have to pay too.<\/p>\n

This is common practice in Latin America where you have to pay to use the restroom. Some places have different prices if you want toilet paper (con papel) or without toilet paper (sin papel).<\/p>\n
