I decided the best way for me to check out Tokyo in a <17 hour overnight layover was to forego sleeping at the Hilton Narita Airport hotel<\/a> and opting to stay in Tokyo city-center. I didn\u2019t want an overly major expensive hotel since I was going to be checking in at midnight and leaving the hotel early in the morning. I\u2019ve always wanted to stay at a capsule hotel, so I booked the First Inn Kyobashi Tokyo Capsule Hotel for 3,600 Yen ~ $30.24 USD taxes included.<\/p>\n

I took a public bus from Narita International Airport (NRT) to Tokyo Station for 1,000 Yen ~ $8.40 USD which took approximately an hour with no traffic. Avoid the expensive Limousine Buses.<\/p>\n

It was an 8 minute walk from Tokyo Station to the First Inn Kyobashi Tokyo Capsule Hotel.<\/p>\n

The front desk agent pulled up my reservation which had already been printed beforehand and asked me for 3,600 Yen since it wasn\u2019t a prepaid reservation. I handed over a 10,000 Yen note and received change in coins and 1,000 notes. Afterwards, he handed me a key with the number 331.<\/p>\n

I inquired about the internet at the capsule hotel and he proceeded to point to the WiFi spot on my phone. Then I asked, \u201cWhat\u2019s the password?\u201d and he did not know how to say it in English and kept saying \u201cJapanese\u201d. I didn\u2019t have a Japanese character keyboard on my iPhone installed and he couldn\u2019t speak a lick of English.<\/p>\n

Needless to say, he handed me a laminated paper with a list of bizarre house rules.\u00a0one of which stated\u00a0there was no Wi-Fi available.<\/p>\n

I headed to the third floor where I saw a bunch of capsules and proceeded to find a locker with the corresponding number 331. I left all my belongings at the Hilton Narita Airport Hotel<\/a> and all I brought was a portable battery charger. The locker was small and there was no way any suitcase was able to fit in there. I realized that I was not the only there and I can hear basically everything from my neighbor turning on his reading light to the communal bathroom door being opened and closed.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve never stayed in a communal dormitory style accommodation before and haven\u2019t stayed at a hostel even though I considered staying at one in Rio de Janeiro<\/a>. There was a small TV, a thin mattress pad, pillow, and pajamas. There was also an electrical outlet port for two devices and a reading light. I liked that there was a privacy shade which was basically a curtain and not soundproof.<\/p>\n

I thought to myself that the most frightening that could happen would be someone coming into my capsule to steal my iPhone and locker key which has access to my passport and wallet. That\u2019s the worst that can happen so I hid my phone and key under my pillow. For some reason, I always think of the worse possible scenario.<\/p>\n

I woke up at 6:30am and thankfully no one invaded my privacy. I only slept for a few hours and couldn\u2019t wait to get out of the place! I visited the bathroom and ventured off into exploring the Ginza, Shibuya, Harajuku, and Shinjuku neighborhoods of Tokyo.<\/p>\n

Would I ever stay at a Capsule hotel again? Probably not. The novelty has already worn off. Did I enjoy my stay in Tokyo in the short amount of time I had? Of course!<\/p>\n
