One of my favorite things to do when visiting a new city in Latin America is to visit the local mercado which means market. The mercado is an everyday place that locals shop for fresh produce, meats, and vegetables. There are also many food vendors offering affordable authentic regional cuisine inside the mercado.<\/p>\n

The Mercado Central is located in downtown Belo Horizonte and there are multiple entrances around the building.<\/p>\n

The Mercado Central in Belo Horizonte is very different in a sense that it sells mostly meats and cheeses. I didn\u2019t see any produce for sale, but there are plenty of supermarkets around the area that sell fruits and vegetables.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s also a section inside the mercado for fresh cut flowers.<\/p>\n

Other strange items inside the mercado consisted of woven baskets, storage units, and straw hats.<\/p>\n

There were also handmade instruments and tiki torches for sale inside the mercado.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s even stranger is that there were birds and mice for sale at the Mercado Central.<\/p>\n

The highlight of the Mercado Central is the dining section where patrons took up almost every square inch of the area. It felt like a party atmosphere.<\/p>\n

I had a feijao tropeiro which is typical Minas Gerais food from a food vendor inside the mercado. I washed it down with a Brazilian Guarana Antarctica soft drink.<\/p>\n

The most famous dish from the Mercado Central is the figado acebolado com jil\u00f3 which is beef liver with onions. Everyone was basically eating this and it was pretty good.<\/p>\n
