I had booked a one-way economy award ticket from Lima to Los Angeles via Dallas (LIM-DFW-LAX) using 15,000 American Airlines AAdvantage miles.<\/p>\n<p>Before I left for Havana&#8217;s Jose Marti International Airport (HAV), I saw that my LAN Airlines flight from Havana to Lima (HAV-LIM) was on time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/files\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18098\" src=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/files\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay1-576x1024.png\" alt=\"aacubadelay1\" width=\"480\" height=\"854\" srcset=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay1-576x1024.png 576w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay1-169x300.png 169w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay1.png 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, my American Airlines flight from Lima to Dallas (LIM-DFW) was delayed by 5 hours!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/files\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18099\" src=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/files\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay2-576x1024.png\" alt=\"aacubadelay2\" width=\"480\" height=\"854\" srcset=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay2-576x1024.png 576w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay2-169x300.png 169w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay2.png 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t want to spend an additional 5 hours at Lima&#8217;s Jorge Chavez International Airport (LIM) and especially not at the lousy <a href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/2014\/02\/23\/lima-international-airport-sumaq-vip-lounge\/\" target=\"_blank\">SUMAQ VIP Lounge<\/a>. For the past 6 months, I&#8217;ve been looking for a direct Lima to Los Angeles (LIM-LAX) flight on LAN Airlines, but award space never opened. This is a story on How American Airlines Saved the Day and Got Me Home on a 787 Dreamliner.<\/p>\n<p>I immediately fired up the Twitter app on my iPhone (see <a href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/2013\/08\/05\/why-twitter-is-important-in-the-miles-and-points-game\/\" target=\"_blank\">Why Twitter is Important in the Miles and Points\u00a0Game<\/a>) and DM&#8217;d (Direct Messaged) the @AmericanAir Social Media Team for help. I informed them that my LIM-DFW flight was delayed by 5 hours and wanted to see if they can rebook me onto a oneworld partner, LAN Airlines since they have two departing flights between midnight and 2am.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/files\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay3.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18100\" src=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/files\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay3-576x1024.png\" alt=\"aacubadelay3\" width=\"480\" height=\"854\" srcset=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay3-576x1024.png 576w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay3-169x300.png 169w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay3.png 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The American Airlines Social Media did a fantastic job of responding quickly and offered me a 2am departure on LAN&#8217;s direct flight from LIM-LAX on their 787 Dreamliner due to IRROPS (irregular operations).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/files\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay4.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18101\" src=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/files\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay4-576x1024.png\" alt=\"aacubadelay4\" width=\"480\" height=\"854\" srcset=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay4-576x1024.png 576w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay4-169x300.png 169w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay4.png 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This actually worked out better for me because I got to avoid a layover in Dallas and I got back to Los Angeles quicker. It was also my first time on a 787 Dreamliner ever and it was a great experience, even in economy class.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/files\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay7.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18104\" src=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/files\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay7-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"aacubadelay7\" width=\"480\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay7-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay7-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay7-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay7.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When I landed, I eventually found out that my original American Airlines flight from Lima to Dallas (LIM-DFW) was cancelled!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/files\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay6.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18103\" src=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/files\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay6.jpeg\" alt=\"aacubadelay6\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay6.jpeg 640w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/\/sites\/12\/2015\/04\/aacubadelay6-300x225.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t undermine the <a href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/pointssummary\/2013\/08\/05\/why-twitter-is-important-in-the-miles-and-points-game\/\" target=\"_blank\">importance of Twitter<\/a> when you&#8217;re stuck in an IRROPs situation like myself.
