I booked the Sheraton Ambassador Monterrey Mexico Hotel with 1,500 Starpoints and $30 cash using Starwood cash and points. The going rate at the hotel was $110+ tax. I value 1,500 Starpoints at $45 and with $30 in cash, it still came out lower than a $110+ tax rate which is a great use of Starwood points.<\/p>\n

I took a taxi from Monterrey airport at a rate of 260 MXN. The prices are fixed for different zones. There is only one taxi company called Cars Go in MTY airport and they hold a monopoly. It feels so weird not to get hawked at when stepping out of customs for a taxi in Latin America.<\/p>\n

It took 30 minutes from MTY airport to El Centro where the Sheraton Ambassador Hotel is situated. I didn\u2019t have internet, so I couldn\u2019t check if the hotel was still selling a suite. Their highest suite is a junior suite.<\/p>\n

When I stepped out of the taxi, I was greeted by the bellman who offered to help me with my bags. I politely declined and made my way to the front desk.<\/p>\n

The front desk agent welcomed me to the hotel and thanked me for being a Platinum member. She pulled out a laminated card and asked me to choose what type of Platinum amenity I would like.<\/p>\n

I chose the 500 Starpoints and I asked her if there were any suites available. Without checking her computer, she said that I had been upgraded from a standard room to a deluxe. Fair enough, I didn\u2019t want to argue with the clerk since I couldn\u2019t check the SPG app if a suite was still for sale.<\/p>\n

The lobby was very ornate and looked more like an upscale Sheraton. The shocking part is that the Sheraton Ambassador hotel is a Category 1 Starwood property.<\/p>\n

I went up to the deluxe room and found it quite pleasant. It was very spacious with minimalist d\u00e9cor. The king bed and executive desk were spacious. The room also contained a red plush chair with an ottoman next to a small coffee table.<\/p>\n

The bathroom and shower was quite small, but was adequate and contained the usual Sheraton amenities.<\/p>\n

The best part about the room was the great views of the mountains of Monterrey.<\/p>\n

I went down to the Club Lounge for evening appetizers. The Club Lounge is located in the lobby next to the front desk check-in area. I thought this was weird because Sheraton Club Lounges are usually located in the Club Floor.<\/p>\n

The Club Lounge was empty and contained a variety of cold snacks along with pastries. There was also a fridge with bottled water, soft drinks, and juices.<\/p>\n

Breakfast is also served at the Club Lounge, but I overslept and\u00a0didn’t\u00a0have a chance to see what was offered.<\/p>\n

I would definitely recommend the Sheraton Ambassador hotel if you need to stay in the El Centro part of Monterrey, Mexico. I was a little bit disappointed that the front desk agent\u00a0didn’t\u00a0upgrade me to a suite. I did check SPG.com after I settled into my room and suites were available even before I went to bed. I\u00a0didn’t\u00a0feel like playing the @spg Twitter game and tell them that they\u00a0didn’t\u00a0upgrade me as a Platinum guest. I was happy with the deluxe room because it was spacious enough. I almost felt like the deluxe room could even be somehow re-arranged and converted to a junior suite because there was so much empty space. At 1,500 Starpoints and $30, this place is a bargain and the hotel is walking distance to all the tourist attractions and local Mexican shops and restaurants.<\/p>\n
