I woke up to a text in the middle of the night from my sister asking me if I could drive her to the airport next week. It turns out that she is going to a conference in Prague for work. She e-mailed me her itinerary and I was shocked to see that it was an American Airlines ticket. She\u2019s flying from LAX-RDU-LHR-PRG-LHR-LAX with British Airways operated flights from London to Prague.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the dilemma. I wanted to use my Systemwide Upgrades (eVIPs) to upgrade her from LAX-RDU-LHR and LHR-LAX, but I had 0 left! I\u2019ve read in Flyertalk that some people have had success in asking American Airlines to advance Systemwide Upgrades. I decided to put that to the test since it never hurts to ask. I have already flown 77,000 EQM\u2019s this year and have 40,000 BIS miles booked for the rest of the year. I sent off a tweet to @AmericanAir:<\/p>\n

As expected, the outlook response looked pretty grim. I decided to call the Executive Platinum desk and the agent told me that he could not, but he said that I could call back when the AAdvantage Customer service desk opens in a few hours. It never hurts to ask.<\/p>\n

I called the Executive Platinum desk and another agent shot me down and wouldn\u2019t even transfer me to AAdvantage Customer service because she said that they would bounce me back to the Executive Platinum desk. She said that she gets that question all the time from Executive Platinums.<\/p>\n

I asked her another question. Since I already have confirmed eVIPs for an upcoming itinerary, is it possible to cancel my SWU\u2019s and redeposit them? She gladly said yes! She warned me that there was already a waitlist for my confirmed SWU\u2019s. I said, go ahead and redeposit them because I want to upgrade my sister who doesn\u2019t fly in Business Class often.<\/p>\n

The moral of the story: It doesn\u2019t hurt to ask and be persistent, but sometimes you have to put family first in unexpected events like this.<\/p>\n
