No Fuel Surcharges on Hawaiian Airlines to New Zealand using AAdvantage Miles

Aloha spirit is the hallmark of Hawaiian Airlines

On February 27 I wrote about new service from HNL to Aukland, New Zealand on Hawaiian Airlines starting on March 13, 2013. I have since received messages from several people asking if there will be a fuel surcharge. Checking on the American Airlines website I found the redemption to be at 37,500 miles and USD$17 in taxes and fees. So I can confirm that there are no fuel surcharges.

From the aa.com website

Using the OneWorld and Other Airline reward chart the redemption values from North America to South Pacific are the same values: 37.5k economy, 62.5k business and 72.5k first class one way. Since HA does not have first class you could redeem say JFK-HNL (with a stop over as the US gateway) and then continue to Aukland in business class for the above rate of 37.5k or 62.5k in business class. Do note that HA Business Class seats are not lay-flat seats.

Looking at availability on flights in March on both ExpertFlyer.com and American Airlines it appears to be wide open, although the non stop flight is only 3 days a week and often the booking engine tries to route you through Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne Australia.

This will be an interesting redemption. What would be your guess on when miles will be fluid between AA and US?

I don’t think anything will happen until after October when they predict the deal will be approved by the US and EU regulatory agencies.

Only downside are the crappy biz class seats
