Dubai Opens New International Airport

They said “ build it and they will come”…and so far, nobody has come except a few airlines, but Dubai’s largest airport has opened for business. This is not Dubai International Airport (DXB). This is a new $33 billion dollar airport that just opened – Al-Maktoum International Airport. Currently, there are only three airlines operating here – Gulf Air, Wizz Air, and Jazeera Airways , and soon more will come, including the home carrier, Emirates. They plan on moving their hub from the current location DXB, to this one upon full completion. When I visited Dubai the last time, I recall the construction on it, but didn’t get a chance to get a closer look. Upon completion soon, this will be the world’s largest airport, and probably the world’s busiest airport. Currently, the busiest in the world is Atlanta’s Hartsfield airport (ATL), which is a Delta Airlines hub. The airport will boast 5 main runways, all which can accommodate Airbus A380’s, and be able to handle an annual capacity of over 150 million passengers. Personally, I would like to inquire on the food scene at the airport, and if there is going to be a shorter customs line, because DXB was a bit chaotic upon arrival. Will I be redeeming Ultimate Reward points to fly into this airport soon? Not likely…..but I am looking forward to flying into it, just to check it out. Nothing beats that new airport smell. Happy Travels!
