An Alternative to Bali & Why You Should Go

One of my dear friends just came back from Bali, and he was quite disappointed.  The crowds, the mob of European tourists, the backpackers, and everyone else in between, seemed to make him twice about going back.  The last time he visited was like 15 years ago, and the changes were very great this time around. I actually have never been to Bali, and I have heard nothing but mediocre things about it from my Indonesian friends. They tipped me on a little secret: if you are looking for serenity, and a tranquil tropical exotic paradise, skip Bali altogether, and head for Lombok.  The island is situated right next door to Bali.

Lombok is not as congested as its overrated neighbor Bali. There are less motorbikes buzzing the streets, less people walking aimlessly in search for that trinket to buy, and less scam artists, trying to rip you off. You will find yards of empty white sandy beaches, tranquil rainforests with the the same flora and fauna of Bali to enjoy, and a nice size mix of locals to keep that balance between home and being away from home. There’s also a lot of activities that you can do privately, like snorkeling, and hiking, without the large crowds.

Getting There

Lombok has its own airport, and has airlines such as AirAsia, Garuda Indonesia, and even Silk Air (Singapore Airlines) serving it. It shouldn’t be an issue booking a flight to Lombok.  Taxi services and buses are there to take you to your hotels just about anywhere on the Island. Of course, you can check with your hotel on transportation arrangements upon arrival and departure. In fact, most of my Indonesian colleagues told me getting in and out Lombok airport is much easier than Bali, and the taxi rates are way better, of course.

Lodging

I seem to have gotten a lot of recommendation on staying at the Sheraton Senggigi Beach Resort. This Starwood property has a decent beach, and is located in a prime spot with well maintained grounds. The hotel itself is a bit older, but the quality you expect from Starwood is there. The rates are decent too. Of course being a Starwood property, you can use SPG points to stay here, and that will even make the vacation a better value.

Hotel options range in the very expensive, such as the Oberoi Lombok, on Medana Beach and Lombok Lodge, to some lower priced rentals, which can go for $20USD/night. You just have to find something within your budget and comfort levels, that won’t leave you with your shirt off at the end of your trip.  Having said that, there seems to be something for everyone and is  all very much possible in pristine, and tranquil Lombok. I hope to experience Lombok, and plan on skipping Bali altogether.  I have been in this region a lot and know exactly the surroundings I’m looking for, and crowds and tourists is not high on my list.  Have you been to Lombok? I’d like to hear your experiences.  Happy Travels.
