Hyatt Takes A Gamble

Hyatt takes a gamble. Literally. Hyatt is taking a gamble that you’ll want to stay at MGM Resorts in Vegas if you can earn, and use, Hyatt Gold Passport points there.  A lot of people have already written about this partnership, I know. But, this news has an interesting impact on an upcoming trip for me.

Beginning June 20th, Hyatt members will be able to earn and redeem their points at hotels like ARIA, Bellagio, Vdara, MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, THEhotel at Mandalay Bay, The Mirage, Monte Carlo, New York New York, Luxor, Excalibur, Circus Circus.

Starting in August, Hyatt Gold Passport and M life (MGM’s membership rewards program) will be eligible to opt-in to reciprocal tier status match in with the other program.  There are five levels of M life levels, so it will be interesting to see which levels align. Earning top-tier status with M life seems like it would be pretty costly (you earn the more you spend and gamble).

Here are the M life levels:

SAPPHIRE   PEARL   GOLD
PLATINUM  NOIR
Here are the hotel benefits for M life members (from Sapphire to Noir left to right)
Room Discounts or Comps
Best Room Rate Guarantee
Room Upgrade (subject to availability)
Priority Check-in Line & Priority Early Check-in/Late Check-out
Turndown Service
Priority Access to Pool Cabanas and Bungalows
Access to Dedicated Concierge Phone Line
Spa/Salon Priority Reservations
Guaranteed Hotel Reservations

I have a conference in Vegas during one of the most expensive times of year. It’s at a hotel I don’t want to stay at. I’ve looked for Starwood hotels, of course, but they’re all sold out.  There are rooms at several of the MGM hotels and this could be a good use of Hyatt points.  I guess I’ll have to wait until the 20th of June to see what the redemption options are.

Do you have a favorite MGM property?  The big question will be – do I stay at one of these properties or do I stay at a Hilton property and work towards Hilton Gold again? Decisions, decisions.
