Green Hotels Forget About One Thing

More and more hotels are going “green” and publicizing their commitment to the environment and saving the planet (one towel at a time.)  Many hotels are doing very good things and have changed their practices.   It seems to me, however, that almost every single hotel I’ve visited that promotes “green”, especially in the bathroom where they ask you to hangup and reuse towels, forgets about one thing.

When was the last time you walked into a hotel bathroom and saw the box of tissues with a carefully crafted tissue flower and thought, oh, I’ll use those tissues that someone put their hands all over to fold into this beautiful shape.  Well, I’ve never had that thought.  When I see a tissue flower the first thing I do it throw it away.

I use tissues regularly (I’m allergic to just about every tree and blade of grass) and for applying makeup, etc… But never, ever have I used the carefully twisted tissue flower.  Sometimes the tissues are folded into a clean triangle and only 1 or 2 tissues are rendered unusable, but sometimes the tissue flowers use up 6 or more tissues!  That doesn’t seem very green to me.  Imagine how many tissue flowers are made every day.  Potentially there could be literally boxes of tissues being essentially tossed out each day.  Not green.

So, I implore you green hotels, please, be kind and save the tissues.   What do you think?

  1. …and I thought I was the only one who felt this way about tissues in hotel rooms, Stacey.

I always remove the first five tissues from an open tissue box; but I do not immediately dispose of them. Rather, I use them for such functions as wiping the sink or using them as a base — functions which do not require them to touch my face — before I then dispose of them.

I hope that all is well with you, Stacey…

  2. Ah, Brian, what a great idea. You know, I can’t believe I didn’t think about using them for things like that. Now I feel silly : )

All’s well here. Hope you’re doing well too!

    Stacey
