{"id":1425,"date":"2012-08-14T16:45:57","date_gmt":"2012-08-14T20:45:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/?p=1425"},"modified":"2013-04-23T13:34:18","modified_gmt":"2013-04-23T17:34:18","slug":"travel-photography-tips-my-favorite-shots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/verygoodpoints\/2012\/08\/14\/travel-photography-tips-my-favorite-shots\/","title":{"rendered":"Travel Photography Tips &amp; My Favorite Shots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the best parts of traveling, for me, is bringing home great photos. \u00a0I have turned one room in my home into a\u00a0personally\u00a0gallery that features some of my favorite pictures.<\/p>\n<p>So how can you take great photos? \u00a0Well, I&#8217;m certainly not an expert, but I love photography and have picked up a lot of tips along the way. \u00a0Here are a few:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Focus on something specific &#8211; find an item of interest and look for interesting ways to feature it<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t center everything. \u00a0Photos are more interesting when they show contrast, dimension, texture and perspective<\/li>\n<li>Take lots of shots. You never know which one will be &#8220;the shot&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Photograph what you&#8217;re interested in. \u00a0I usually take better pictures of things I like.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>I focus my gallery on similar photos and create a &#8220;theme&#8221;. \u00a0 I created two focus areas in this room, one focused on snow\/ice and pictures taken in Alaska and another area focused on warmer pictures, in this case, from both Alaska and Hawaii.<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/IMG_3339.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1428\" src=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/IMG_3339-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/IMG_3340.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1429 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/IMG_3340-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>Here&#8217;s some of my photography<\/div>\n<div>Photographing interesting architecture and famous landmarks makes great pictures<\/div>\n<div>I like taking photos from many different angles<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/100.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1437 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/100-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/IMG_3248.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1427 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/IMG_3248-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>Sometimes I try to focus on a theme &#8211; this one was a series of shots of the sun<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/10-10-17-12-PM.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1448 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/10-10-17-12-PM-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/10-10-17-05-PM.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1447 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/10-10-17-05-PM-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>Wildlife is always fun to shoot and it really does take some luck to get a shots like these<\/div>\n<div>This is a shot I took in Hawaii on a whale watching tour. \u00a0I had no idea that I even had the shot until we were headed back into the dock. \u00a0The professional photographer on board actually bought this shot from me.<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/IMG_3342.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1431 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/IMG_3342-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>This picture is from Alaska. Again, a whale watching tour (do you get the idea that I love whale watching? Yes, I do!). Again, a lucky shot and a once in a lifetime shot. \u00a0I shared this story in a recent Million Miles Secret Interview as one of my favorite memories. \u00a0A pod of Killer Whales was toying with a sea lion and preparing to make it an afternoon snack! \u00a0Three humpback whales entered the scene and tried to protect the sea lion. It worked for a while, but in the end, the killer whales won and got the sea lion.<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/P1000238.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1458 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/P1000238-300x141.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"141\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/SeaLion-KillerWhale.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1460 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/SeaLion-KillerWhale-1024x284.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"430\" height=\"119\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>Sometimes a lack of color can create interest. Mine is drawn to the small boat in the middle right side of the shot. \u00a0These next two photos are taken in the Phi Phi Islands Thailand<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/11-5-26-17-PM.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1451 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/11-5-26-17-PM-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>Again, I like the fact that noting is centered<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/11-5-21-13-PM.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1450 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/11-5-21-13-PM-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>Another thing that makes photography fun are the shadows. \u00a0Here are some of my favorite photos with great shadow<\/div>\n<div>This photo was taken in Fiji just before the sun went down.<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/031.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1443 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/031-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>This photo of a light house was taken in Australia. \u00a0The light was coming towards me and the shadow is on the structure.<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/017.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1438 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/blogs\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2012\/08\/017-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>I love fireworks!!
