Food. \u00a0I&#8217;m not just talking about any food though, I&#8217;m talking about French food. Yes, that&#8217;s right, French food in Bangkok.<\/p>\n<p>This secret is almost so good that I don&#8217;t want to spread the word, I want to keep it to myself. Atop the recently opened Sofitel Sukhumvit Bangkok on extremely busy Sukhumvit Road sits French concept restaurant. \u00a0L&#8217;Appart, or the\u00a0Apartment, \u00a0has\u00a0several rooms, just like an apartment, including a library, a living room, a kitchen and dining room. The restaurant feels like a place you would call home. It\u00a0is based on a Haussmann-style apartment (Haussmann buildings are also referred to as pierre de taille or cut stone) with beautiful decorative finishes, wooden floors, and fireplaces.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2941\" alt=\"lappartkitchen\" src=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2013\/03\/lappartkitchen-300x180.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/verygoodpoints\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/\/sites\/2\/2013\/03\/lappartkitchen-300x180.jpg 300w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/verygoodpoints\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/\/sites\/2\/2013\/03\/lappartkitchen-568x341.jpg 568w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/verygoodpoints\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/\/sites\/2\/2013\/03\/lappartkitchen.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I first found L&#8217;Appart during their soft opening in mid-2012 and instantly fell in love. In fact, I went back 2 more times in the first two weeks they were open. \u00a0The food is absolutely stunning. \u00a0Jeremy Tourret serves as Executive Sous Chef at L\u2019Appart and his kitchen, which is visible to diners, is a work of art.\u00a0 The kitchen is decorated in black and reds and is quite warm and welcoming \u2013 like a kitchen should be. \u00a0Since the soft opening, I&#8217;ve been back on every trip I&#8217;ve made to Bangkok &#8211; so in total, I&#8217;ve eaten here 6 times now and will keep going back.<\/p>\n<p>The menu at L\u2019Appart, created by chef Tourret, changes about every two weeks.\u00a0 According to hotel General Manager Christian Schlegel, who I \u00a0met during my second visit, Tourret cooks food that inspires him \u2013 food that he loves. And it shows. Every plate is a masterpiece. \u00a0 And I&#8217;m not the only person who believes this. Just this week, L&#8217;Appart was voted\u00a0Thailand&#8217;s Best Restaurants 2013. \u00a0To me, it&#8217;s evident why &#8211; the food is star of the show.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2934\" alt=\"award\" src=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2013\/03\/award-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/verygoodpoints\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/\/sites\/2\/2013\/03\/award-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/verygoodpoints\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/\/sites\/2\/2013\/03\/award-454x341.jpg 454w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/verygoodpoints\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/\/sites\/2\/2013\/03\/award.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Last night I dined with two friends at L&#8217;Appart. \u00a0The bar was crowded, filled with Thailand&#8217;s affluent young professional crowd and tourists who were enjoying a special\u00a0champagne\u00a0event &#8211; three hours of bottomless champagne for the low, low price of 2,999 baht (the equivalent of about $100 USD). I suppose if you planned to drink a lot of champagne, it would be a good deal. \u00a0Tons of people were enjoying champagne. \u00a0We sat outside at the rooftop bar and enjoyed a mojito.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, we sat in the kitchen with a perfect view of all the action. \u00a0I had been dreaming of the french onion soup since my last visit, so I was thrilled when it was still on the menu (and at the end of the meal, I told Chef Tourret to make sure it was still on the menu in May, when I return.) It&#8217;s literally the best French Onion soup I&#8217;ve ever had. The presentation is awesome and the flavor,\u00a0divine. \u00a0The soup comes to the table in a bowl covered with a puff pastry. \u00a0The staff gently cuts away the shell revealing the steaming soup.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2936\" alt=\"IMG_2351\" src=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2013\/03\/IMG_2351-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/verygoodpoints\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/\/sites\/2\/2013\/03\/IMG_2351-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/verygoodpoints\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/\/sites\/2\/2013\/03\/IMG_2351-454x341.jpg 454w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/verygoodpoints\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/\/sites\/2\/2013\/03\/IMG_2351.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2937\" alt=\"IMG_2356\" src=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2013\/03\/IMG_2356-225x300.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/verygoodpoints\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/\/sites\/2\/2013\/03\/IMG_2356-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/verygoodpoints\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/\/sites\/2\/2013\/03\/IMG_2356-255x341.jpg 255w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/verygoodpoints\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/\/sites\/2\/2013\/03\/IMG_2356.jpg 675w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For my main course, I chose one of the most indulgent\u00a0options on the menu. Slowly cooked chicken with with foie gras and black truffles\u00a0accompanied\u00a0by creamy pollenta. It was beautifully presented and tasted out of this world. \u00a0The dish was by far one of my favorite main courses ordered yet &#8211; it&#8217;s up there with the\u00a0lobster cooked in lemongrass butter served with oyster and potato mousseline.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2938\" alt=\"IMG_2357\" src=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/verygoodpoints\/files\/2013\/03\/IMG_2357-225x300.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On this occasions we did not order dessert, but at the end of the meal complimentary house-made\u00a0marshmallows\u00a0and jelly candies are delivered to the table. \u00a0While I&#8217;m not a huge fan jelly candies, I love seeing them because they bring back a great childhood memory of sitting on the porch with my grandfather and uncle eating jelly candies from their candy factory. \u00a0The marshmallows are really good.<\/p>\n<p>The only drawback to L&#8217;Appart is the service. \u00a0It starts out great, but without fail, every single time I&#8217;ve dined here the service takes a drastic turn for the worse towards the end of the meal. \u00a0Last night we sat for over 20 minutes with our dirty dinner plates sitting in front of us for 20 minutes before a manager came over and asked if we were done. \u00a0There was nothing left on anyone&#8217;s plates&#8230;.we were done. \u00a0Then, it took about 15 minutes before we were able to flag down anyone to bring over a check. It took a while to get someone to come back and run our credit card. \u00a0The first time I had the experience I shrugged it off and said, &#8220;they&#8217;re working out the kinks.&#8221; \u00a0The second time I said, &#8220;they&#8217;re really busy&#8221; now, it just seems quite consistent and is a huge let down.<\/p>\n<p>If Chef\u00a0Tourret hopes to reclaim the title of Bangkok&#8217;s best restaurant 2014, they&#8217;ll need to maintain consistent service throughout the entire meal &#8211; not just at the beginning or when it&#8217;s slow.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, I still think the food is the best French food I&#8217;ve had in ages and is a hidden gem in hot &amp; steamy Bangkok. \u00a0Go for the food, you&#8217;ll love it!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 2012 I discovered Bangkok&#8217;s most gluttonous secret.
