I\u2019m sure hotel concierge love to laugh at the requests they get\u2026but most of them have the sense not to laugh directly in front of your face.\u00a0 I was stunned today when the concierge at the Sheraton Park Lane Hotel laughed at me.\u00a0 I assure you, he\u00a0wasn’t\u00a0laughing with me – he was laughing at me.<\/p>\n
I approached the concierge desk to request directions to the starting location for a specific tour I wanted to take.\u00a0 The person behind the desk suggested three other tours run by three tour companies I was not inquiring about.\u00a0 I asked, nicely, multiple times if he could just give me directions to the location of the tour I wanted to take.\u00a0 It was futile.\u00a0 I finally asked, \u201cAre you the concierge?\u201d\u00a0 He said he was not (turns out he\u2019s a bellman) and informed me that the concierge would be back in 10 minutes.\u00a0 Completely frustrated, I decided to wait.<\/p>\n
When the concierge finally reappeared, I inquired again.\u00a0 He too tried to steer me towards other tours.\u00a0 The same tours the bellman tried to convince me to take.\u00a0 So I began to wonder \u2013 do they make a commission off certain tours?\u00a0\u00a0 I already had a ticket and all I wanted was directions.\u00a0 Why was this so difficult?\u00a0 After going round and round, he finally told me where to go.<\/p>\n
Before I left, I asked if he could tell me what bus went to the nearest tube stations.\u00a0 He said, you don\u2019t need to take a bus, it\u2019s a 5 minute walk. I explained that on rainy days, I might like to take the bus to avoid getting wet.\u00a0 This is where the laughing begins.\u00a0 He said, \u201cDon\u2019t be lazy, just walk. We have umbrellas if you are afraid of getting wet.\u201c \u00a0More laughter and a head shake.<\/p>\n
The woman standing next to me said, \u201cHoney, I\u2019d complain to a manager if I were you.\u201d\u00a0 She was clearly a fellow tourist with a sweet southern accent.\u00a0 I smiled and said, \u201cI don\u2019t need a manager, I have a blog.\u201d\u00a0 She laughed\u2026she was laughing with me.<\/p>\n
I have stayed in hundreds of hotels on 5 continents of the world.\u00a0 This is truly the first time\u00a0I’ve\u00a0been laughed at by a concierge.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think my request for directions to a tour I wanted to take and information about a bus route was too much to ask for.<\/p>\n
