Moving Pictures

Condé Nast Traveler asked:

What movie has inspired you to travel?

my top four movies are all travel-related (yes, yes, i know they are all Europe-y):

L’Auberge Espagnole

i watched this film a couple months before i headed off to Germany to study for two years, so it really resonates with me. still my favorite movie of all time hands down, because it got to the heart of what it is like to study abroad: the diversity of people, the wackiness in the relationships with those you leave behind, and the adventures to be had.

Before Sunrise and Before Sunset

often called love letters to the cities of Vienna and Paris, respectively, you not only feel a connection between and with the two protagonists (portrayed amazingly by Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy), but director Richard Linklater also gets you to connect to the cities the movies take place in. somehow they become more than just the backdrops, silently insinuating themselves into your consciousness and the fabric of the story. i once walked around Paris following a fan-created guide to Before Sunset shooting locations. loved following in their footsteps!
