i finally got around to uploading pictures from last week’s trip to Qatar and the UAE — here are some of my favorites:

Zubarah Fort, Al Zubarah, Qatar

sidebar: the persian gulf

growing up, my image of the Persian Gulf was this:

i was 13 at the time of the Gulf War, and i remember watching CNN nightly. because of this, Persian Gulf became synonymous with “Desert Storm”, burning oil fields, Scud missiles, and Saddam Hussein.

it wasn’t until over two decades later that i actually saw the Gulf with my own eyes. i knew there was much more to it than conflict and strife (and Iraq and Kuwait), yet it was a relief to see it, to touch its waters, and to know that there are more salient associations to be had than the narrow understanding with which i lived for most of my life.
