Instawalk: Abandoned Ruffin Nichols Memorial AME Church

i had originally intended to visit the Church of the Assumption but ended up parking by (and thus discovering) this place instead and checked it out first. (a good thing too, since in the end i was unable to access the former.) doing research now, it appears that the church was starting to collapse and was featured on a TV show, though i’m unsure which came first.

you can sort of see what the building looked like on Google Earth — for orientation’s sake, i will be making references to the left and right buildings in the captions below. the left-hand building (i’m assuming it’s the sanctuary) was mostly demolished except for part of the wall closest to the other building, which housed what appeared to be classrooms/offices downstairs and a large multipurpose room upstairs.

One end of what I’m assuming was the sanctuary (the building on the left)

What’s left of a steeple (on the left)

What’s left of some stained glass, building on the left

Upstairs of the building on the right. Sumihuck?

More stained glass (from the remaining wall of the building on the left). Surprising amount still remaining.

Love seat

Someone seems to have reappropriated this mural

Tree growing out of the building on the right (between the two)
