Descent Into Anchorage

my window seat rule is “any flight 2 hours or less” but i got upgraded heading up to Anchorage today and the only seats available were window seats. i certainly wasn’t going to turn that down, despite it being a fourish-hour flight! i did some research and people said to sit on the side facing land each way (i.e., “POSH“, someone said — “Port Outbound [from Alaska], Starboard Homebound” — left heading out of Alaska, right heading into Alaska).

and i was in complete disbelief for the last half hour of the flight or so. we were flying over rugged islands and inlets, some tiny, some large, some forested, some bare, and then the final turn into ANC…stunning (last photo below).

all of these were taken with my phone on United 1479 SFO-ANC, arriving a little before 9 PM at night.

Is this a glacier?

Passing the airport to make a U-turn

Does that mean it’s raining in that one little spot? I, being a Californian, don’t know such things.
