in the nineteenth century, Chinese immigrants built communities along the shore — houses and alleys on stilts extending out into the water. six are still inhabited to this day, the largest of which is the Chew Jetty, named after the Chew clan that built it and settled there.

admittedly it’s a bit odd walking in front of and peering into peoples’ homes, but many of them have turned them (at least partially) into stores and homestays. nevertheless, it’s a step into the past and a welcome respite from the hustle of the busy streets of George Town.
