We Saved €127 On Train Travel In Austria Just Today By Using an Einfach-Raus Group Ticket

as i was researching train connections from Vienna to Melk on the ÖBB website, i came across the “Einfach-Raus-Ticket” (which can be sorta translated as a “Just Get Out There Ticket” or “Easily Out There Ticket”) which gives up to 5 people all-day travel on non-high speed regional trains run by ÖBB for just €36. this is similar to Deutsche Bahn’s Happy Weekend Ticket (Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket) except it’s also good on weekdays and their Regional Day Ticket (Länder-Ticket) except it’s good throughout the entire country, not just a region.

if you are taking bikes with you on the train, there’s a special version of this ticket (the Einfach-Raus-Radticket) for €45.

the trains it’s good on

it’s good on pretty much all S-Bahn, regional (“R”) and regional express (“REX”) trains run by ÖBB (so, no Railjet, no IC, no EC). some other limitations apply; see the website. it’s also good on the Raaberbahn for short trips across the border into Hungary. if you’re searching for train itineraries, be sure to select “Einfach-Raus-Ticket” in the Products field to only return results that are valid with this ticket.

buying the ticket

you can buy this ticket online, at a machine, or at a train station ticket window. we used the machines — the option is readily available on the first screen.

how much we saved

we went round trip to Melk today from Vienna, something that would have cost €16.30 per person each way, so round trip total of €32.40. we had five people, thus a total of €163.

the Einfach-Raus-Ticket cost only €36 and covered all five of us for the same price, saving us a whopping €127, or over $150.

we couldn’t take the Railjet connection because it’s not allowed on the Einfach-Raus-Ticket, so it did take us 30 minutes longer each way (1 hour and 19 minutes vs. 49 minutes), but $150 is definitely worth an hour, IMHO. of course, your results may vary depending on your route and number of people in your party, but even for two people you’d be saving money on this journey.

so…

if you’re traveling in a group and have a bit of time to spare and want to save money, it’s worth investigating these special offer rail tickets in whatever country you’re visiting! studying those websites might just pay off!

“5E” stands for “5 Erwachsane”, or 5 adults
