Instawalk: A Morning In Sibiu, Romania

ever since i first heard about Sibiu in 2007 (when it got European Capital of Culture), i’ve wanted to check it out, and i’m glad i took an early leave from Bucharest to make it up here to Transylvania. (not that Bucharest was bad at all, i just figured i should see more of the country while i’m here.)

the compact old town is very walkable and can be seen in one day. definitely take the time to go down some of the side alleys and peek into the courtyards too, for as scenic as the city is, it’s still a place where people live and conduct everyday business.

there are more pictures in this series than my normal instawalks; it’s because it’s so pretty and quaint! indeed, one of the best discoveries was the Holy Trinity Cathedral, whose striped walls caught my eye from a distance. i have always loved the interiors of Orthodox churches and this one certainly did not disappoint. all it was lacking was some incense wafting through the air, but the murals were so magnificent it definitely a treat.

some additional photos:

if you’re in the mood for a traditional Romanian meal, check out Crama Sibiul Vechi — it’s a small place with a dozen tables in a cellar, but the food is very traditional and priced well for the city center.
