B is the mine. from Tres Pinos, it&#8217;s pretty much a straight shot, but the road gets worse and worse in condition, so you will be dodging potholes left and right. and though it&#8217;s quite scenic, it also gets narrow and windy, so keep your speed in check as you&#8217;re navigating those potholes and sides of cliffs. there&#8217;s a sheltered picnic table and permanent portapotty along the way (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blm.gov\/ca\/st\/en\/fo\/hollister\/recreation\/Griswold.html\">Griswold Hills Recreation Access Area<\/a>, shortly after you turn off Panoche Road) if you need to answer nature&#8217;s call. once you get to the site, you&#8217;re going to be going completely off-road over dirt\/gravel\/rock, sharing the space with ATVers and offroad (motor)bikers, who will likely look at you and your car with incredulity. well, at least they did me and my prius. i did give a biker whose motorcycle broke down a lift back to town saving\u00a0him from a long ride as a motorcycle passenger. i\u00a0think is the first time i&#8217;ve ever given a random person a ride, but long story short there were reasons why i felt safe in doing so.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>it&#8217;s a shame i didn&#8217;t visit a couple years ago, since (according to the wikipedia article) there was a fire that destroyed many buildings (you can see some of the charred remains) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/8588168446\/in\/set-72157633080128535\">it&#8217;s a superfund site<\/a> now (again). also, there are signs posted on the buildings that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/8588166210\/in\/set-72157633080128535\">warn of hantavirus<\/a>. yep.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"P3243103 by jon|k, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/8588154064\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"P3243103\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8366\/8588154064_9d95307fd5_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The scenery changes from verdant fields with wildflowers to more arid and brown the closer you get to the mine.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"P3243115 by jon|k, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/8588155704\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"P3243115\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8225\/8588155704_eaf008a754_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">And you&#8217;ll see lots of cows.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"P3243116 by jon|k, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/8587055749\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"P3243116\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8380\/8587055749_d6d8858cbc_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is one of the nicer sections of road.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"P3243119 by jon|k, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/8588156628\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"P3243119\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8521\/8588156628_441bfb943d_z.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">When you see this sign, you know you&#8217;re there.
